But They Have Good Marketing and Web Presence....

I found this news story interesting because I've had to
replace furnaces on residences and investment properties.

Then I looked at some of the companies involved, and
most have been around the area for a long time.

Their marketing/websites look pretty good, and some
are on prominent paid directory sites and have good BBB
standing.

Interesting from a marketing standpoint.

Do you drop a client if you find out they are actually a crappy
operator?

Only if your conscience dictates that you do so.....

For most businesses, as long as the "crappy operator" does not reflect somehow on your reputation, that consideration is irrelevant. Examples are service providers such as electricity, internet, cellphone, etc., etc.

Nah, just sell them a better reputation management solution

    jk.

    Define "crappy operator"?

Your marketing will be more difficult (or you'll have more work to do) if you work with clients that continually do their customers dirty...

I have the luxury of working with clients that do good work (*usually) but every business has breakdowns in customer service and delivery at some point...Some bad PR probably wouldn't cause me to drop them though.

I guess if they are constantly unethical or deliver poor service, I'd
    leave 'em.

Some of the companies in the post did change their operations.
They made it so one estimator - who is on commission - could no longer
get away with selling unneeded systems or repairs.

If it was a case of an employee being incompetent or unethical and
the client took corrective action, that would be fine.

Of course, if I don't know, then I don't know and would not do anything
unless it harmed my business reputation.
