    Link directories are not useful now. Most of them are spammed to death. Still you can submit your site to some directories like dmoz which have got really high PR. But never try to do massive directory submission.

    It depends on what directories you want to use. There are lots of them that are dead, spammy and useless. There are some good article directories like ezinearticles, goarticles that can be useful. I think.

    I can only think that the reason you are asking that question in this section of the forums is because you have a store front local business otherwise you should be asking this in the SEO section of the forums.

    If you have a local store front business I'm thinking you're referring to sites like Yellowpages, Yelp, or Manta. These aren't directory sites per say but more like business listing sites and yes, these are an essential part of SEO for local businesses.
