Yelp Accusations Cause Nightmare for Business

UPDATE: I just saw on tv news that yelp is going to remove the reviews because they weren't first hand. I'll bet they wouldn't have done it if tv didn't get involved.

This kind of thing makes me really angry. The accusation is unsubstantiated, and yet ruinous to the business owner. It's like yelling fire in a crowded theater. There needs to be repercussions for websites that allow false and libelous statements to be made.

I can't wait til yelp gets class action sued for their shenanigans. They love leveraging bad reviews and "filtering" legit good reviews then hammering businesses by sales people to sign up for 250-500 a month "hinting" that it will help their reviews.

Yelp is seriously flawed by not verifying that reviewers even visited the business, nor verifying anything purchased, nor even requiring reviewers to use their real names.

Legitimate feedback is very important for consumers and for businesses. But this vindictive crap gets out of hand.

How would you suggest doing that? BTW, that is not a "hey" lets argue ... It is a legitimate question.

I was thinking of Amazon now verifying the reviewers as purchasers of their products and facebook where people mostly use their real names. It cuts down on the drive by vindictive slams on products/businesses if people use their real names.

vindictive reviews by anonymous people on yelp is terrible. yelp also restricts business owners in how many replies they can do daily. WTF? They cannot even answer their accuser on a timely basis.

In order to better verify things, Yelp could do much to at least verify their reviewers identity. They could also put in a GPS tracking in their app to at least show the reviewer was in close vicinity of the business they are reviewing. They could also build in their app, a photo scan upload of the receipt showing the reviewer actually bought a product or service from the business on a particular date. Yelp then would have tons of value from actual purchase data mining.

It could be used internally for verification and not published details, they could then highlight and give those reviews more weight who have used their real names and provided some proof of purchase.

You know, the basic gist is using todays technology to provide better, more relevant, reliable information. That would add value to the whole process. But I think yelp is arrogant and is strong-arming businesses, instead of thinking of ways to provide them real value.

Oh come on, their reputation is going to go to pot, and the public will will basically shun them if the accusations stick. Why drag a lawyer and lawsuit into the mix? I mean they probably will, but come on, you drag a lawyer in and the only person who wins is gee... the lawyer.

Yelp is too big for it's own good. It's a self serving entity that has cornered the review market. Until the market shifts and starts using another platform they will have a stronghold on local business owners.

Why doesn't some brainchild from the WF come up with something better?

There are tons of alternatives The problem is they've gotten so big that even sites that work better than them will take years to gain the same following.

Of course there's alternatives to yelp... What I was saying that it's too big for it's own good. It has an obvious monopoly in the market and you're right, it will take years to build up that kind of momentum in the industry. But it can be done. I know for a fact that there's people on this forum that could build a better platform & tons of marketers that could promote it.

The reviews were removed because they were against the Terms of Service as all reviews have to be first hand. Comments of the nature posted by those who aligned with the lying reviewer aren't reviews.

Same thing happened to Amy's Baking Company on Yelp which had upwards to 500 negative comments even though the Baking company deserved every single flame they received. Yelp deleted them because they were just comments posted as reviews.

I just feel bad for the bagel shop. This is one negative side of social media. It can be used to ruin ones reputation and almost everyone believe it. I feel sad for them, its gonna take a while for them to clear this mess.

yelp users who leave feedback should be required to use their real full name. There are a ton of immature losers on there trashing businesses anonymously.

      I agree 1000%!

Reviews and testimonials are regulated by the FTC so I wholeheartedly believe that any one leaving a review or testimonial should be using a their real name.

I think people freak out too much about yelp. Sure a review may go viral like this. But for the most part the average consumer cares more about what their friends say about you then what Yelp does.

I can't wait for the day yelp allows yelpers to reply publicly to yelpers reviews . Seriously a busboy refused you service and more than likely she didn't even inform a manager just went straight to yelp to get sympathy and UFC points.
