I haven't been on the WF in a good while. I wanted to chime in and give a quick update.

One year ago I was doing a few little offline marketing gigs in addition to holding down a full-time job. Details of that here:

http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...ld-you-do.html

Since then, I had managed to build thing sup enough to be comfortable to leave. But I didn't want to just leave. I wanted to get laid off. And that's what happened. Full story here:

A New Chapter Begins |

(Yes, the title says I quit my job. When you go to your boss and ask to be laid off, you're pretty much quitting, just being strategic about it.)

Ok, enough of that. Here is the real reason I felt prompted to write this post.

I just got off the phone with a prospect that I had e-mailed just earlier this morning. In addition to talking business, he mentioned how he liked the e-mail that I sent. How he usually gets tons of such e-mails and never even opens them, much less reads them, much less responds to them, much less set up a meeting in person to discuss further. (We're meeting tomorrow morning.)

This is the third time I've run the exact same cold e-mail campaign and the results are by far and away better than any I've ever done.

Let's take a look at it, and then why (according to a little research and even more so to Mr. Prospect) it works.

Here it is:

__________________________________________________ ______

Subject Line: Company Name negative Yelp reviews

Body:

Hello,

I noticed you guys have some recent negative reviews:

[link to Yelp page]

Dealing w/ negative reviews & getting positive reviews out there is something I’m currently helping a few companies in the area with.

When you have a few minutes, I’d love to talk to you or the appropriate person about that.

God bless,

Jarrod D.

So why does this work?

1-The company name is in the subject line, making it catch their eye and making them more likely to open it.

2-The subject line (in accordance with can spam) is nothing misleading, but mentions exactly why I am writing them.

3-The body is short & sweet. No lengthy report to read. No video to have to watch. Just a quick & clear "Here's the problem. Here's what I got. Here's what to do." At one time I thought if I sent a free report, or a video, or something like that which would educate them and provide some value they could use even if they don't buy, then I'd get some clients that way. Results were terrible. I now realize that doing such was actually creating a hurdle for the prospect. "You mean in order to understand what you do and do business with you I have to watch this long video or read this long report? Ain't nobody got time for that!"

4-In the words of Mr. Prospect, it was less salesy and more inquisitive in nature.

5-The call to action was very clear. I'm not asking for a lot of time or a major commitment. Just a quick conversation.

6-I provide the exact link to their Yelp page, further making it clear it is not a general mass mailer they are receiving but something just for them, and also helping them to see first hand (in case they are not aware) the problem which I am here to solve.

Ok, there may be more to it than that, but that's the gist of it.

Go and do thou likewise, and of course, may the force be with you.

    hey jedi,

it takes courage to quit a full-time job and take on the internet marketing endeavor. i applaud your well-earned success. i was also recently laid-off (involuntarily) from a dead-end job and quickly found myself interested with internet/reputation marketing. regarding reputation, which system do you prefer/use? i've looked into david sprague's...but still kinda skeptical with his tactics and strategies. thanks.

    Great story!

I really like the style of your email. Very well thought out and effective. From the biz owners point of view it catches their attention and points out a problem and solution immediately without having to read 10,000 words. Well Done!

It probably works because it doesn't have the feeling of an email that you can easily tell was sent to 5,000 other inboxes. It was personal and didn't try too hard.

Typing this just after finishing the meeting with the prospect mentioned in the initial post. It went well. Closed the sale.

Alright, to answer a couple of questions.

My business is built in part upon this ORM WSO by Paul James:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...mediately.html

(Not affiliate link, have no association with the guy, have never met or spoken to him.)

Not familiar with David Sprague. Will have to check him out.

I also use the following wordpress theme to set up a review portal feedback site:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...ess-theme.html

(Not affiliate link, have no association with the guy, have never met or spoken to him.)

In addition to this, I also follow the top ORM companies and block out a few hours a week to study up on the latest trends, what's working, what's not, etc. And I tweak things accordingly as I go along.

There's a few things that I am looking to do in the near future to generate sales, but thus far my strategy has been pretty simple. Be an active Yelp user myself, take notice of when a local company gets a bad review, and send them the e-mail in the original post above.

I also just started playing around with this tool:

Local Scraper - One Bot Five Scrapers

It scrapes data from Yelp and will show me a list of companies which I can then sort by rating, and contact the ones with poor rating. Got a few leads from this, no sales yet, but just started using it a few days ago.

Hi there. I was thinking of trying out Local Scraper (for Yelp, mainly), but never received their free trial link. What are your thoughts on this app? Do you know if it can pull data from Yelp listings that contain specific keywords?

      much appreciated--

Yep, that's pretty much exactly what it does.

I will say this. The tool was not perfect. The results did have some holes in the data that I had to go look up and complete manually to be able to contact the businesses. Contact them and ask for the free trial if you tried to get the link and did not. Or give it a try and get a refund if not satisfied.

Congrats on your venture jedi! It is truly an amazing feeling when someone can break free from their jobs and finally go into biz for themselves.

Also, thanks for sharing your cold email method.

Have you tested this method vs. just cold calling businesses with negative reviews? How much warmer do you think the prospects are when you call after receiving the email?

No, because I despise cold calling and avoid it at all cost. I've done my share of it and will do it again if need be. I'll do anything and everything I need to do to grow my business. But as long as I am able to get results using methods I enjoy (or at least don't mind) I'm not going to spend time on cold calling.

My apologies. I guess I misread. I thought that you were sending these emails and then following up with them with what would still be a cold/slightly warm call. If this method actually gets the prospects calling you then great job.

          No apologies needed dude.

I throw the bait out there with e-mail, and as soon as there is a little nibble, I get on the phone, then soon thereafter meet in person. Once they nibble, I'm all over 'em. (Not in an obnoxious way of course.)
