Obviously the WSO model is a success. Put up a course of some sort for free or a reduced price, then upsell on other services or private mastermind groups.

I see lots of people that offer services to small businesses such as SEO, lead gen, reputation management, or even consulting. But I don't see many people that put a basic product out there like a WSO to their local small businesses as kind of a loss leader in order to bring them in. Sure, some people give away websites, but that is a lot of work that must be replicated time and again. A product is created once and distributed over and over.

So what about putting together some sort of online course to offer local businesses for free or at a low price, then following with the opportunity for more interaction like those that sell WSO's? Maybe a webinar or e-course on a relevant subject to those small businesses, and then offer them more interaction through a mastermind group where you act as a consultant and lead the group for a monthly fee. Seems like one could sell services such as web design, SEO, or the like off of a platform like that, and would get to have paid interaction with those small businesses, almost like a paid little mastermind forum.

Anybody ever try this, or something similar? Did it work out for you? Or if you haven't, do you think that a model like this would be a good idea, or a bad idea? I can see a lot of potential upside, the downside would maybe be the amount of time that running a group might consist of. How much would you charge each member knowing that some people in a mastermind would need little of your time while others would be constantly asking questions and seeking advice?

Just an idea that I had. Maybe something like this exists and people do it all the time and I'm just unaware. Seems like an interesting model to me.

I only have 1 question. Is there a known demand for this product or service that small businesses are looking for and have requested it?

Well, if you give them a free or inexpensive course on something that helps them much like anyone here would for a WSO, then yes. Teach them how to do some Facebook marketing, or how to do some basic on page SEO, some strategies that they can use to JV with other local businesses to help one another, etc. Small business owners ask for help with these things all the time.

The second part, the meat of the offer, would be a mastermind group that you would upsell them on, just like many WSO's. Local small businesses turn to consultants all the time, so this would just be a little different way of applying the same thing. Give those small businesses a place where they could access you (the consultant) while getting advice from others as well in a forum style mastermind.

As a supplement, you could offer services that we all know that small businesses need, such as web design or deeper SEO help, reputation management, etc.

So then, I guess the answer is yes to all three phases in general. Will local small businesses go for it when presented in this way? I don't know specifically, and that's kind of my question. I know that people sometimes hold webinars and invite local businesses, and that it is a viable strategy for some. I don't know if anyone has transitioned such into a paid mastermind forum.

I see where you're coming from.

I would put something together and test it in your local market first.

When I sold ad spaces on my coffee mugs I was able to attract more business using the "Exclusive" angle. Meaning if a plumber paid to have their ad on my mugs then no other plumbing competitor was allowed to participate.

So when you present it to small businesses it gives them an advantage over their competitors.

I say give it a try and see what happens. Document your process and as your project grows then create off shoots of your program.

An off shoot could be "Eastside" group and a "Westside" group. This would increase your residual income as you head up both groups.

There is so much you can do with this as long as you stay proactive in the groups and bring new materials and insights that help increase those members bottom lines.

I actually have the idea in the works, probably 90% of the way done.

Where I'm hung up right now is figuring out what to charge for the mastermind group. I want to be very active in it and to do some cool things to help, but it will require my time. I have zero idea how much time it will require though, and no idea what to charge. I know too that I shouldn't charge based solely on time but rather on value. On yet another hand, I know that small businesses are often strapped for money, so I will need to convince them of the value, which is part of step one where I give them value for free.

I've been part of a mastermind before that was about $70/mo but I found it sorely lacking in direction and participation by those that ran it. I want to be available as a consultant through such a group and to provide real direction. I just get hung up when money and price comes up. I've always had a hard time attributing value in a specific dollar amount to whatever I do.Just part of the way I was raised.

Well here's an idea. Offer 3 different access packages.

Kind of like a Silver, Gold and Platinum.

With each package it has it's own unique price but as you move up to the next package lever the price increases and the client is given more access to you, your exclusive material not found in the lower priced package.

Dan Kennedy has used this formula for close to 35 years and it always works in mastermind groups.

Meh. What's Dan Kennedy know? Lol, I kid, I kid. I'll think about how I could set that up within the platform I have. Hmmm.......

I like the idea o 20 Groups/Masterminds for local busineses and have suggested it on here a few times for people to add to their companies' offerings. But I don't think you need to eliminate your SEO fees to do that. Add it in addition to. More profit not shifting profit.

Interesting take. I agree, to an extent, but I know a lot of small business owners that I run into on other forums that want to do their own marketing and that are looking simply for advice. They have the time. Heck, I have my own small businesses and I do those things myself. I do agree that they are strapped for time, but not all are. I deal with them on other forums frequently. Seems like there's both types out there. I guess we'll see. I'll report back for sure once I'm going on this.
