Google Keyword Planner - Inaccurate Results - Proof Inside.

If you are doing keyword research for localized terms using the keyword planner then expect extremely inaccurate results.

From my experience they are showing 5 to 7 times lower search volume.

Just as one example of many,

.....from just one keyword I can see 77 Impressions on an exact match term from which we got a CTR of 28.57%. The planner shows approx 10 searches per month.

My advice - take the planner results with a pinch of salt.

Yep, the fact that gkwt doesn't show the most accurate local volumes has been shared for some time now. There's a whole host of reasons why but your post definitely serves as a reminder to not fret over it.

I have not really visited / participated in the forum for over a year. Only came back recently so wasn't aware it has already been shared several times.

Nonetheless, as you said......reminders are always good

It never was you are correct.

However, it is only when you test keywords via Adwords do you realise just HOW inaccurate it actually is.

The purpose of my post was to show that in my testing it is out by as much as 7 times.

Agreed, and it sucks when you're trying to show a client traffic estimates, and you know there's more searches but there's no data to prove it.

I use a formula that seems to be pretty accurate.. I take into account the industry, the popular keywords terms and multiply or divide based on the population to figure out the real quality of the keyword and search volume. Has worked for me with very little variance.

My formula is simple - multiply it by 5 and by 7 and real search volume sits in between. Of course this is very general and depends on the industry.

Your formula sounds intriguing but you do not give much away here on the secret formula
