Clients paying 20k+ from these stupid little posts

So your an off-liner trying to land the bigger deals or high end consultant or want to be one and where to advertise is always on your mind.

I have landed many 20k+ clients in last 3 years from stupid little posts that either cost me nothing or just a few bucks.

Your wondering were do I put my advertising to get those big clients and deals?
Do I take out a full page ad in a business magazine.
Do I hit TV, Radio, go to some of those breakfast networking meetings?

Well you will laugh when I tell you how in the last 3 years I have landed my absolute biggest deals.

From stupid simple little posts for FREE on places like Kijiji.
Kijiji in Canada is like Ebay classifieds in the states I suppose.
This can work on any locally focused classified site.
It may take you some time to find the correct recipe but a free ad that bombs is better than a 10k print ad that bombs! :-)

To make it work remember these points:

1. Posting your service where it is unexpected and yet well targeted catches your ideal buyer off guard and that is important. If Mr. Business Owner is reading a business magazine he expects advertising and has his defenses up BUT if I post my ad in the Business and Industrial section of a classifieds site where they sell business equipment I can reasonably assume that at least a few people shopping there are business owners and they have their defenses down and that is the time you will receive the least resistance.

2. If you have them with defenses down make a compelling ad and NOT something that blends in. Headlines like this will not work.

"Does your business need a web site?"
"Let us handle your online marketing"
"We build web sites for $200"

I won't give you my exact headlines but just know to be different.

Things like "Got 10k for a 20% increase?"

3. You will totally piss people off! Based on your ads every jealous person that has no work and is selling sites for $100 will email you telling you your nuts and who the hell do you think you are.

For example if everyone is posting to sell web sites for $100 I list at starting from $5,500 and put zero effort in selling how good I am. It creates interest in a select few and they are the ones you want.

You should see some of the hate mail :-)
BUT
I laugh all the way to the bank because I do get sales and with one sale and one client life is good compared to having to land the 25 clients they need for the same revenue.

BIG DISCLAIMER

I am NOT suggesting you rip people off. I have been at this for 15 years and my business is strong because I do not do a job unless I know from experience I will make a client more than I cost them.

For example, time and again I have worked for businesses that lost years of revenues due to crap sites, poor seo, poor copy and poor exposure. If I charge them 10k and fix those problems it is often a joke to make them more than I cost them.

I would not say its easy money its just a different way to find what can be very high quality prospects.

The high ticket sales generally involve management and deployment of a full online marketing strategy but the conversations always start around what the prospect is familiar with such as lead generation, increasing conversions etc...

I did not bother including one of my ads because they are so specific to what I do, my experience etc... I more wanted people to focus on the fact that if you already have a high end service that sells, surprisingly you can pick up a quality lead from somewhere as simple as a classifieds post in a business and industrial section.

I have heard too many times how it is too expensive to advertise a high ticket services with people restricting their focus to paid ads and hope this will help others think out of the box.

Great out of the box marketing.

Advertising in print newspapaers and magazines works but it's costly. This is something you can do no matter what your budget is and I can see how it could be effective because it's so different it would stand out the way you do it. Also a nice way to get clients from other business niches instead of the usual ones everyone is going after.

        Thanks,

        Ron

Totally awesome post!!! You sound like you're one of those people who actually has a real business that helps people :-)

The thing is, I'm pretty sure your websites are kick ass, so the lesson here is you can charge 10k or more, especially if dealing with a client that has high ticket products or services. It's easy to forget just how much of an impact a website has if you are able to get it to increase in conversions from 1% to 2% for example.

    Cheers

To expand on the idea of marketing where nobody else does,
a high end bed distributor did.

He displayed his beds at a vintage car show.

Well they are Baby Boomers with money
and more likely to have little aches and pains in their
      aging body.

He has a captive audience being the only one having beds
      on display.

        Hey Ewan

This reminds me of something I read recently, a guy had a stall at a Dentist trade show, instead of selling dentist equipment like everybody else, he sold high end shirts....and made a total killing because it stood out.

I advertised my mortgage business in the "homes for sale" and "apartments for rent" section of the newspaper. It worked well for getting calls. This was in the infancy of the internet, or maybe before.

If you do something like that on Craigslist, it will get flagged for being "miscategorized".
    Too much regulation on Craigslist.

Peter, who writes the copy for your blog? No offense, but it is full of grammatical and punctuation errors. OR are you French Canadian? If so, I recommend hiring an editor that speaks English as a first language.

No offence taken at all and thanks for your recommendation.

Client sites get appropriate content and an editor to make sure things are in order, my personal site is about my passion for sharing information. My ideas come fast and I get them out quickly and I hope that those that receive the information are more concerned about the information than grammar. Any potential client that is so concerned about grammar or punctuation on my site would not be a good fit.

You will also find my posts on warrior forum have tons of grandmatical errors and problems with punkchewation two ;-)

I am sure he is not offended. While you're focusing on grammar, he is closing $20K deals.

Trade shows are another great lead source. Don't do a local marketing internet show, but a manufacturing show or whatever non-related show that draws your niche that may leave you the only game in town. Some shows really limit non related vendors(ex. sunglasses at a furniture show) but you can tailor your info to make your services relevant. Having said that, the booths w/ massage chairs, foot massagers do really well. One guy sold foot orthotics at a huge show, for $225 a pair, he was makin a killing with a slick demonstration gig.

I totally agree with charging more. I hought charging £1000 for a website is outrageous, when the client bragged how he just got £60 k order from it.
No wonder I thought it was an easy selll - takk about undercharging!
I am in the process of redoing my site and everything, what else can I say:-) I am definitely charging more next time:-)
