Pushing news site off of page 1

I had a offline business contact me who is located about 1500 miles away from me. A local newspaper did a not so good article on them and when you search the companies name, this news article appears just under their Website & Google Plus Local Page. I have noticed that this company has not claimed their Yelp listing (not sure if this will help).

They do have a Facebook Page, YouTube Page but these are on page 2 when you search their name.

The goal is to push this article off of page 1 (the keyword is their business name) but the local news website is no. I have to find out all the details but they have hired a SEO company in the past and paid them alot of money but they did not budge the article.

Has anyone dealt with a situation like this, what did you do to push the bad article news website off of page 1. I was leaning towards some video marketing and ranking the YT videos since I may have good chances as Google owns YT.

Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's pretty easy to do... the SEO company probably just didn't do anything lol.

The difficult thing is when you have a variety of properties ranking for the business name but wanting to push something like Yelp down to the 2nd page. A news article is probably pretty easy to get pushed down, its not a rip off report or anything, depends on the strength of the page. What is the PR of the page?

I think they're approaching it the wrong way though from a reputation standpoint.

The first goal should be to establish properties that spin the negative pr into their own story. The second goal, should then be to push the news article down.

The home page PR doesn't matter. When was the article published? The fact that the article is a PR0 after the PR update this month tells me the internal linking structure and PR distribution is weak. That's a good sign for you... problem is, it's ranking because the business has a weak reputation model.

So really... the easy, most ideal top 5 would be.

        Website
        Facebook
        LinkedIn (company page)
        Twitter
Yelp (might not be a good idea if they aren't a very good company lol)
        YT channel (with videos)

Since yelp is a question mark... your next 5 should look like this:
        Manta
        CitySearch/Superpages/InsiderPages (easy to control reviews)
        Businessnamereviews.com/net/whatever
        Vimeo
        Pinterest/4square

The reason facebook and YT are not ranking 1st page is because they aren't distributing internal PR and links properly. More likes = higher ranking, more FB buttons on social sites for the business = higher ranking. YT, more subscribers, or activity on the channel, even if you're going around liking other videos, the higher it will rank. Take advantage of videos, more videos, the better PR the channel gets. Same goes with twitter, the more followers and people you follow, the better your PR(kinda) and better you rank for branded terms.

Thanks for all the tips! The article is now over 1 year old.

Do you have a recommended tool to tell the PR value of a YT channel or YT video?

Thanks again for all of your help!

I'd add Crunchbase to that list. I've seen them rank extremely high for branded searches.

Thanks for all the input. I have met with the potential client and put together a video marketing package (10-15 videos that will all be unique). With the proper on-page optimization, these videos may push down the site but I am wondering if it doesn't, what would you guys charge per video to do monthly seo on it?

I have seen in past threads, people that are charging $99 and up a month per video. I am guessing, that they are purchasing a few $5 video seo gigs.

            Thanks

I think your best bet is to create a breezy Youtube video and optimize it strongly with the same keyword as the article-if you do your work well you can replace the article with the video within 2 weeks-google is known to favor Youtube vids and they are quite easy to rank for local search terms. Worth a go.
