Newbie's Cold Calling Journal

Hey guys, just wanted to share my results, or lack thereof from my first day cold calling for my Web Design services, after having read multiple threads, especially the inspiring posts by IAmNameLess, who had his back to the wall like I do now with rent being due right now and whatnot. (I also have SMM and ORM services I will offer, but I figured because I have no previous clients I may as well go for Web Design first since I had thought it to be an easier sell?)

Day 1:

Anywho, so after scraping some 900+ leads from Mobile Renegade, and getting 500+ leads from infofree.com of new businesses established within the past few weeks I got started using John Durham's free pdf script - I called a few from MR's list and I got "I already have a website" a lot so I was wondering if these leads were mostly outdated. As for infofree, I called 7-8 pages of 13 leads per page, and some of them were franchises/big companies that set up new shop at the location specified, so those were disqualified, and then most of the people I got to had a site already, or there was a voicemail/no answer. So I'm thinking these infofree leads aren't that good either, but I will refine my cold calling strategy, seeing how exactly I'm going to go about getting clients, and with which service being marketed..... Will keep this thread updated.

Best of luck on your journey ashclevermtkg, following your thread as I myself need the motivation to cold call for my offline businesses yet have not had the chance to. Just remember to be organized wth an excel spreadsheet or notebook and track your progress then. Also add a 'follow-up' column for those to call back. If I might ask, is MR worth the money? Was looking at it myself and heard it's gold yet no budget so was considering saving up.

I can tell you that infofree's new business data is really really good for new businesses. I have a calling team and we call all over the country every day and new businesses are one of our favorite lists.

The problem, as you experienced, is that there's a ton of franchises and corporate with new locations, so you have to filter them out. I have an assistant who pulls the data and organizes only the types that we're looking for, but you could certainly do it on your own with a little time.

    Dear new guy that doesn't know how to sell yet;

if you know you are going to hear "We already have a website" over and over again, then add it to your pitch. Say "I create qualified leads and sales for businesses that already have a website".

Why? Because now they want to know "Why" they need to already have a website. "Because businesses with a website already knows that just having a website isn't enough. Your website has to be found. Every day, there are people in your town looking to buy what you sell. But they need to find you. I help them find you. Would you like to know more?"

And then make an appointment. or talk to them.

I was thinking about the offering other services, which I do now - I was thinking to myself, hm, if all these leads are most likely online already, why not add services to compliment that, instead of having to drop the lead because I only sell web design?

Hello, this is Biff and I am a small business owner is this a bad time to talk or do you have a minute of two?

Great, I help businesses become more successful than they already are. Do you currently get leads from your website and if so how many a month...

You are not sure how many leads you get from your website, ok here is the first way I can help you...

Ok, you are all set with your main website, cool...does your website work properly on mobile phones?

Ok you are all set with your main website and your mobile website, how do you track the leads you get from all your advertising efforts...you don't have a plan in place that tracks where all your leads are coming from...here is how I can help you with that...

ok you track where all your leads come from awesome, one last question, what system do you have in place to reward your loyal customers or to get more referrals from your current ones....

you have everything in place just right...before I go I am sure you know two or three other business owners that are not as set up as you are..who should I call next

    etc etc etc

    Congratulations on your efforts.

Since you're offering a Web Design Service" focus on new businesses locally.

These folks don't yet have a website, nor have they even fathomed how the heck they're going to get people to come to it, nor realize that the sites they're drag and drop building themselves are going to be problematic on mobile devices.

    Easy way to find them:

    1. ReferenceUsa.com - all you need is a library card
    2. Google search strings for new businesses...

Here's at least one: "site:manta.com "established in 2013"

You can get a ton more than that but its all you need to get all the new business leads forever.

Best of luck and keep it up.

    Regards
