I want to start a business targeted to seniors like a transportation service or a consultant. I don't have a degree but a marketing background
Any business ideas besides starting a health agency?
Also how can a consultant gain trust from the senior market?

Have you tried plugging your question into Google?
You'd be amazed at what comes up.

I copied and pasted your exact question and came up with a wealth of ideas.

First decide what part of the 'baby boomer' market you are trying to reach. Baby boomer is a generic term that covers a 40 year span of adults. You mention 'seniors', uhm still too broad. There are people in their 60s trekking the Alps, then there are others who are in nursing homes. You'll first need to narrow your age range, then find out who the majority of people are in that range. Lumping 'baby boomers' and 'seniors' together is a huge mistake that even big advertisers get wrong.

Find a few back issues of AARP (if you're looking at the US market), check Elder Hostel and other sites to help narrow your market. Always, always, absolutely always find your market first - then look at what they are buying or are interested in.

I know an 85 year old who recently purchased her own Kindle, owns a laptop and isn't active on Facebook because it's too much 'trivial nonsense' for her. Don't assume anything.

They get insulted if you call them seniors.

Don't make the mistake of considering 'Baby boomers' as "Seniors"-the age range is from 45 to 70. This particular demographic is not yet ready for the chopping block-you are going to alienate your customers if you regard them as 'Seniors'-there are all kinds of people among them-you need to narrow your focus and drill down further, what are you actually offering them, and why?

My target population is seniors especially women over the age of 75 in an age population. They are seeking ways to avoid social isolation and if I can make it a business and put a smile on an elder's face, that is my goal. I have two interesting ideas to start a transportation service to social recreation or maybe a create a package for senior centers about expanding senior activities to avoid being alone maybe? I know there are dating websites targeted to seniors.

You might also want to approach assisted living places. Around here, some are too small to have their own van, so they always hire out. Some have vans, but you might offer transportation to smaller groups (2-3 people at one time), which would increase the type of outside activities they can organize for their people. And, of course, you could deal directly with the residents too.

Pick up Dan Kennedy's No BS Guide to the Boomer Market book -- it's a good resource on what's going on with people 55+.

And it's a great market because that's where most of the big money is lying around anyway. And they will spend it to to add value to their lives.

Which always seems to surprise me, because TV networks are always talking about targeting the "coveted 18-45" demographic. What's the big deal -- most of them are broke!

Now is a great opportunity to work in really any form of insurance -- life insurance, retirement planning, Medicare supplemental coverage insurance.

Some ideas for senior services here:
    thecarenavigator.com

I don't think there's much profit in senior transport.
A lot of volunteers are your "competition", and then the cost of a van, fuel,
    maintenance, proper insurance...

That only means you have to position yourself differently. The for-sale-by-owner signs have not driven out of existence real estate agents, for instance. Neither have sites like Trulia.com.

Actually I was going to edit the post a bit.
From what I've seen in the last two towns I
live in - local everyday stuff, not so much market.

Perhaps longer trips, tours, or special events, concerts...

Right. If you do local, every day stuff, you have to provide more than just the driving them part. Like, we drive you to your doctor appointments, to any store you want, and we'll cook you dinner and help you clean your home, do your laundry, and we'll send a nurse to help you with your meds every day.

Because the volunteers don't have that kind of time.

Getting a bunch of them from Chicago to a casino in Wisconsin, or from Milwaukee to Chicago, so they can see an ABBA impersonators group concert, or some such thing, you're competing with companies that organize tours, but there's more money in it. And there's got to be a place where tour organizing companies think it's too small and volunteers think it's too big to enter.

Of course, if you offer more than the driving, if you organize the event, there's even more money in it.

From what I've seen, many of the seniors have first hand stories to tell about their life that are worth letting others know about.

One recent example is the Rose Bowl parade where channel 5 disgraced itself by cutting off information about the WASPs float. This was a group of women who became pilots in WWII, and their story is pretty amazing. I first heard about them from a friend of mine whose mother was one of the pilots on the float. Their story was reported in the LA Times:

    http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-wasp-float-20131223,0,1569145.story?page=1#axzz2qsLMzXc5

I've met too many people who have similar experiences whose stories don't get recorded or passed along before they passed away... the sound man for Gone With the Wind, a piano accompanist for the Roger Wagner Choral, a confidant of JFK, a friend who was one of the Freedom Fighters in Hungary, my piano teacher who studied with the first piano teacher of Vladimir Horowitz, one of the founders of PentaLabs (made early vacuum tubes), etc., etc., etc.

So teaching these seniors how to do storytelling would be one idea.

Showing these people how to get their story published would be another.

Take a video of them describing their life that could be passed along.

Genealogy? That becomes a bit more important as people grow older.

Head over to the retirement communities which generally are a goldmine of experiences just waiting to be recorded.

Heck, see if you can get a column in a local newspaper to report this type of thing.

Look at the services offered by companies already working with seniors, like Compassionate Senior Care Services | Senior Helpers. (Franchise. I know a guy who bought a franchise. Seems to be doing good.)

You can remodel homes with seniors in mind... bathtubs with bars, lower cabinets in the kitchen, etc., etc. In some kitchens, there's not enough room for a wheelchair but some seniors can get around only in wheel chairs...

Organize social events, fun classes, etc.

Help them shop, cook, clean, get dressed, wash, do laundry.

I believe organizing events, teach how to send an email, etc in senior centers at the target market area would be my way to build credibility in the senior market, but transportation or something life enhancing will be the key ticket.

Gain there trust by using a business model that boosts confidence and self worth. The main thing that stands out for me is depression issues. Seniors often feel left out, lonely, disabled from life, depressed, and sometimes worthless. Significant other have passed and most are usually left alone living by themselves. My solution is senior interaction, an activities business so to speak. Organizing events, workshops, family days/family lunch ins, etc...

As a business you would contract yourself/business to retirement homes and organize and execute the following I listed above..for example:

Events: band night, theatre performances, comedy night, family Christmas parties, Christmas lights tour, old time movie night, take them on a tour of a museum .
    * would need to purchase a large Van.

Workshops/classes: crafts, sewing/knitting, wood working, art

Family based events and activities: contact family members and invite them for a surprise lunch in, hold new years party for seniors and there kids, birthday cards and other birthday events.

I can go on forever about this stuff but you get the idea. The main focus of this business is to get them active, and battle depression. Get them talking with other seniors, hopefully help make/build new relationships, make new friends well as boosting there spirits a bit. It would be a vary rewarding business if you choose to do something like that!

If you have any questing pm me and we can talk business ideas!

Take care and best of luck.

I met a few marketing and managers of retirement, assisted living, nursing facilities through the chamber of commerce. Talking to a few might give you an as to what's not covered that seniors want.

Know of a guy who creates some kind of educational videos geared to older people... sells them to facilities not to seniors directly. He got into it from talking to people who work for assisted living and nursing homes. He's not good at marketing, so not too successful... but they pay his bills, his movies.

I need some feedback on ideas I have that can help improve senior center activities....
If I were to start a mobile dental program to present to senior centers, how can I make it a business? Also, seniors (baby boomers) love music, photography, and learning how to use computers. What if I offer services to teach how to use their kindles and create electronic photo albums ? Ideas ?

      Hello,

Maybe I'm missing something in your initial post. Are you able to shed
light on any action you've taken thus far?

You've gotten some really good ideas but it seems like you kinda keep circling the bowl on this topic.

Are you a perfectionist by chance? If so, don't allow that to be your stopping point.

You definitely appear to have the heart for helping seniors. There's no need to wait until every 't' is crossed or 'i' dotted in order to reach out to the facilities that cater to seniors and simply have some sincere conversations about what they'd like to offer or have thought about offering to their senior clientele.

As this group of people turning 65 grow by leaps and bounds to the tune of ten thousand daily, get in and go make a name for your brand now.

The action that I've taken so far was emailing senior centers an assessment letter for my market research and havent received any responses....walking in maybe? i would like to narrow all the possible options i have to offer to the baby boomer market. any ideas to get seniors to want to participate in a focus group?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[8924772].message }}

Why on earth do you need a focus group?

As mojo1 stated, you've been handed several good/great ideas here. Get on with it.
Want to test? Offer a class in whatever at the local library or local senior center.
I know a few people who have done this - very successfully.

They had less help with planning and ideas than you have been provided with here.

Want to get on the fast track? Go volunteer to help someone who is already organizing
activities for seniors. If you're serious about this, you'll learn more by helping someone
who is already in the game, than you will from bumping this thread over and over.

You will gain their trust if you have something worthwhile to offer them - something of value and something that you believe in yourself.

If you are a trusting person, people will tend to trust you.

However, if you are a doubting skeptical person, then you will not be trusted.
