What methods are you using now for online marketing for local businesses now?

I stopped doing online marketing for local businesses back when Google started making all their changes places/local/+ etc. The results were too unpredicticable.

Before all the changes I helped a friend with a carpet cleaning business get ranked #1 in google places, had a few other sites and videos ranking
highly for him. He got a lot of business from this for quite a while, but all his rankings have dropped a lot since then.

Now he's asking for help again and the landscape has changed since then.

What are you doing now to get local business new clients online?

SEO?
Google +?
FB ads?

thanks, Ron

Local SEO is always a good way if the volume is high enough. You shouldn't have got out of the game, the changes were mostly cosmetic and really didn't have much impact on rankings. Google + as a social network really is kind of useless for most local businesses, you just have to play the game for better search experience, like local, authorship, etc.

FB ads could go either way... your ROI isn't going to happen right away. You know IMers always talk about the money being in the list, well, a good facebook presence is essentially a list, although lower converting. It's a long term strategy, not short term. However, FB ads for retargeting would be a good option if the site is getting traffic.

Bing PPC could be a good option, less competition, low CPC, easy to run a profitable campaign your first try.

When Google started making all the changes places, local etc I found that my clients I already had ranked tended to stick, but much harder to get new clients ranked in local google but organic seemed to stay about the same.

      Never considered Bing.

Certain businesses do well with Facebook pages and a combination of high quality content and FB ads. I've worked with several bars to build up their fanpage and have had good responses to them, increasing their visibility and successfully promoting upcoming events. We also produced several short videos that we shared on FB, youtube, etc and they have helped a lot to get new clients for the businesses.

This may not work as well for carpet cleaning for some obvious reasons, but it could be worth a shot!
