Pizza, Purple Hair and a Guarantee

Today thought we could talk about something I saw yesterday and fits perfectly with what we spoke about last week. What was it?

You see, my wife was watching some tv, saw a commercial for pizza and wanted some pizza from a franchise you know.

I had to run some errands so told her would pick it up on the way home. So...

Finish my running and stop in to pick up the pizza.

I pay the girl at the front and she says will be out in a minute. As I step to the side and stand there, I look on the counter and here's a little note that says...

"If we don't offer to show you your carryout pizza, it's free!"

Well sure enough as soon as I read that, a kid with one of the craziest hair cuts I've ever seen (it was pink, purple and half spikes) walks up to the man next to me and hands him the pizza and says "here".

Doesn't offer to show him the pizza and just drops it and go's back in the kitchen.

As I was about to say something to the guy who obviously didn't see the sign, here comes the colorful kid again with another pizza.

He's walking right up to me and figured here we go...

Free Pizza.

But...

Then a girl zig zags in front of him, grabs the pizza from him, walks right up to me, opens the box and shows me my carryout pizza and asks if o.k. with me.

Looked good and went on my way. Not sure if she saw that he wasn't showing the pizza or maybe she wanted to keep him in the back because of his hair, but either way she did her job correctly.

Now here's a couple quick lessons from this quick experience...

For one, they had a guarantee and I'm sure it was there to express that they want to make sure the customer is satisfied.

But didn't say that or anything else besides..."if we don't offer to show you your carryout pizza it's free".

Now here's another thing...

It's a different guarantee from the other pizza places, yet no signs on the outside, not advertised on tv or radio, as a matter of fact...only a little post it note on the counter.

I thought at first it was just the one franchise location, but sure enough, the one on the other side of town has the same little post it note my wife said.

Now here's my quick questions for you today...

If you have a guarantee, are you hiding it like they are?

As you can see from this example, just because you have a guarantee, doesn't mean people will take you up on it, but having a guarantee can really boost your business.

You need to make sure everyone is on board as well. You can see that this kid could literally is on the edge of taking money out of the owners pockets every night.

Of the people who notice the guarantee...How many pizzas is this kid giving away free?

Second...are you even telling your customers why that guarantee is there?

Like we spoke about, I can assume that the guarantee they had was to ensure satisfaction, but didn't say that.

Maybe it was to make sure the employees are doing there job? Maybe it was there because they had nothing else to say. Why was it there?

You need a guarantee, but more importantly...

You need a clear-strong guarantee that has a reason why for your customers.

You think on that while I go grab a slice.

Not sure about "different from other pizza places" as I have seen this offer in multiple joints.
It isn't about making the guarantee known to the customers. It is about making sure the staff does what is expected out of them.

Often times those "free" pizzas will come out of the workers pocket. Nice way to get bad employees to quite vs. firing them.

When ever you see one of those "or it's free signs" at or near the register remember it's not about the customer. It's about using customers to keep employees in line.

Personally if you don't trust your staff you hired the wrong people and that says more about you than it does about your staff.

I think the main take-a-way (excuse the pun), is that a guarantee can really help a business.

That guarantee is probably for the reasons you mention but the point is that they aren't making the customers aware of it.

Whenever I write a sales letter which has a guarantee it gets it's time in the limelight. In fact sometimes the guarantee is for a lifetime... which often works out better than the 30 or 60 day guarantees.

P.S. Great job on the podcast, Eric.

I know but in this case they don't want the customers more aware of it. They only want the attention to detail guys aware of it since they are normally honest. Make more people aware of it and you will lose money from the scammers trying to game the system.

I've seen a few people try to scam this kind of things first hand and it's not pretty for the restaurant or the people in line like me.

Thanks Chris. Had some great guests on so far and having fun sharing the value in "itunes world".

And you're right...the main takeaway is having a strong guarantee and making it part of or the offer.

A lot of people are thinking that they can't guarantee something for longer than x days because people will take advantage of them, but...

Most often, the longer guarantee the less often people will return since often forget it when it's 6 months, year or longer versus them watching the calendar to make sure they don't miss the 30 day return mark.

Basically, if can't guarantee what you do or offer, you shouldn't be selling it. It doesn't always have to be about returning money on your guarantee...it could be work till x, replace or whatever.
