How to monetize a directory website?

What are some ways to monetize a directory website?

Per lead? Have a form that collects leads, and sell them to local busineses?

Display ads? Local companies in relation can pay for ad space.

Premium listings? Charge for listings on the top.

More ideas?!

How does one compete with Yelp in regards to local listings?

For example: Local city tour guides. Yelp has a review system in place for that niche.

But how would a local directory of tour guides set themselves apart initially?

      Thanks guys. Brainstorming sesh!

You have to provide value above and beyond yelp so that customers have a reason to flock to your website.

Think through this carefully. Yelp already has a huge base of locals willing to review businesses, so that's probably not your best place to compete. But could you have a staff writer do little blurbs about how one place compares to another? Could you find a way to get in contact with people who live close by and pay them a small amount for taking interesting or valuable photos? Could you act as a local partnership organizer, and put together packages that involve dinners, car rentals, movie tickets, etc.?

Beating yelp isn't about a head-on fight as much as it is being a smart and creative marketer, and delivering on what people want, but aren't getting right now.
