Questions about paid newsletter

I would like to find out more about paid newsletter, specifically

1) How you launch them

2) How much you charge (when you launch and when did you raise the price)

3) How do you promote your newsletter

4) Which payment gateway do you use for subscription

5) What is the attrition rate (is it same as membership site?)

Just to clarify, I am talking about print newsletter, not email PDFs.

Thanks!

Have you done a search here? There is a lot of information on the subject that has already been posted.

We have launched a few successful newsletters so I will provide some feedback. I say this with the disclaimer that all industries, cities, businesses are different so results are never the same. What worked for me may not work for you. Also my revenue base comes from advertising within the newsletter, not promoting other services or products, so this may not apply.

    1) Typically I try to make a newsletter for an existing organization, this way they take care of distribution and promotion. Most organizations don't utilize advertising the way they should and are more than happy to take help.

    2) This really varies based on the size of the newsletter and reputation of organization. I would say start smaller, maybe $50 to $100 per ad for 1-3 months of inclusion. I know this is low to start but if you can cover printing costs and get it built up you still win.

    3) Again based on what I have done I promote via the organization that I am working with. Typically most have a mailing list already. If not I would suggest Facebook advertising for the organization, you could include this in the price of ads.

    4) Since most of what I do is local it is always check. If I was to do one out of the area the payment gateway is always Paypal. Again this goes back to the advertising based newsletter. If you are charging to subscribe then it could be different.

    5) Attrition rate for me is always based on the advertisers that drop. Typically this is about 15% that drop or go smaller. As far as distribution is concerned, that number usually rises steadily.

Hopefully this helps, I know we may be talking about two different types of newsletters, but there should be some information that is relevant.
