Hey sales team!

We recently added a new developer to our staff which will free up some time for my senior web developer. I am thinking of having him develop some professional quality Wordpress themes built specifically for offline niches. A few questions before I put him to this:

1. Any interest in these themes?
2. What niches would you like to see?
3. What price point is fair per niche theme?

Thanks!

    1. Yes, plenty of interest in good offline WP themes
    2. Any trades or service type niches
    3. As a WSO I would think you would have to start at under $20 as there is a fair bit of competition

I would also suggest you consider what sort of theme developer you want to be:

    1) A high-quality one that plans on offering on-going support / development.
    2) One of the typical theme "developers" selling themes on this forum where interest in supporting the theme fades away after several months.

The real pros will naturally invest their money into solid theme companies like StudioPress.com and Woo Themes, etc. The draw here is a large community of users, great tech support, and an established rep that gives confidence that the themes will be around for a long time.

The real pros also won't mind an annual fee to ensure that support is given. The real pros won't want to use a theme that is likely to break the next time WP is updated, forcing them to again provide a new theme to their clients.

Alternatively, you can develop a few niche themes that may result in quick cash for you, but won't be considered by those that service actual clients. Your only buyers will be those newbies that get sold on the idea of selling these sites to business owners in their area, or whatever, but will never actually succeed in selling enough to make a real business out of it.

Inevitably, your theme will vanish from memory and you will have started on the well-traveled path of creating a reputation for selling products that go unsupported once the next cash-grab idea comes along. I can think of several people I avoid every time because I know their products will stop working in a matter of months and support will be non-existent.

I have higher hopes for you.

Personally, if I were in a position to develop a theme, I would start with developing a child theme for a framework like Genesis. I would charge a low fee with one year of support / updates, with a discounted renewal fee. As I got more experience running this type of business, I would develop an improved theme for a higher price and scale from there.

Obviously, going this route requires a lot of careful planning and dedication. But going this route will also make you stand head and shoulders above most; there is very little competition on the forum for this type of developer I would think.
