What can you do if you have a mailing list of 6000 customers?

This may be a dumb question.
But if you have a physical mailing list of 6,000 customers who bought from you previously over the last 4 decades, what can you do with it that would benefit both yourself and your customers?
In addition, how does it affect the resale value of your business, both with or without an email list?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Some questions are dumb but this isn't one of them.

If the list hasn't been mailed to for some time it would be good to scrub the list and get rid of all the invalid emails or emails that bounce.

Then you can run re-activation campaigns by saying hello and attach some special that's only for those receiving the emails. It could generate a lot of nice foot traffic in the door as people who do come may also bring their friends. = ) New people for the list!

Unless you can show direct revenue from the email list as added sales it's hard to place a value on the list. It could be estimated but if I were a buyer of this business and there was no income to show for the customer email list I would not count it as having any valuation in the price of the business. That's just me though, others might.

      Hey Russ... you missed a few key words in his question;

      4 Decades
      Physical mailing list

      @ the OP.

Has the list ever been utilized before? If so ... How.

Also, I am not 100% sure about this ...
If you cannot prove the list generates revenue then its just a list ... and does nothing for resale value.

First get the addresses scrubbed to remove wrong addresses,
as you can expect with a list this age.

Until you have a verified mailing list,
not much more up for discussion.

Compliance ... a vital part of business and yet here in the warrior forum ...
it is often treated like a red headed step child.

Ignored, abused, scoffed at ... you get the idea.

I have "snail mailed" a re-activation list as far back as 10 years and made alot of money. Mail postcards to "scrub" the list, since it's cheaper than a letter. THe PO should make address corrections, moved, no longer there.

40 years?!! Sheesh. I'm sure quite a few of those people on the list probably hit the bucket.

      You mean "kicked" the bucket.

If they can "hit" a bucket they're still alive and can be marketed to!

The list is mailed every year or two. Invalid recipients are scrubbed off the list. Most of the recipients are institutional who are pretty stable.

If these are customers, it's definitely worth investing in cleaning up the list and re-activating it. Your customer list is a real asset to your business, and can definitely add value if you plan to sell at some point. But it needs to be up to date. I would also look for a way in your re-activation campaign to get them onto an email list (offer them something good, coupon, resource, etc.) so it will be cheaper to communicate with them regularly in the future.
