Co-op Newspaper Listings... does this make any sense?

After reading a few posts about 9x12 co-opping, I had one of those ideas.

I started thinking of buying out one of those full-page newspaper/magazine ads, or in a classified section (in the local newspaper they offer 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or full page ads). Would it make any sense to talk to people already advertising there, sell them on a co-op a bit lower than their current cost, and pay for it yourself, keeping what's left over (just like a 9x12 but in a periodical)?

The local paper sells these ad spaces:

Full: $1087.
1/2: $613.
1/4: $512.
1/8: $377.
Business Listing: $124.

My first thought is that the newspaper probably would have some kind of restriction, 1-space-1-business, but I haven't found anything like that yet. Seems sort of left-fieldish for me to find a rule against it. Any thoughts?

Why don't you call the editor and see if it's ok?

Sounds like an idea that would work if you can do it.

I'll be honest, I really have no interest in doing it myself. The paper I'm talking about (the only one in town) is down to a circulation of 30,000, and it's probably going the way of the dinosaur soon. I posted this as a suggestion to see if anyone else ends up making money off of it, or to help spark ideas for other people.

I would think the News Paper would be happy as a Lark. They just picked up another salesmen for free! No salary or commissions.

My hometown paper displays over a dozen ads on one page periodically so I can't see why this would be against policy.

Check with your paper but ask for a discount too. News Papers often offer ad / media agencies discount pricing especially when the ad is paid up-front.

I think you could do really well with this. Good job out thinking outside the box.
