Directory sites: How much can they really make?

I have a citynameBusinessdirectory domain for the 3rd largest city exact match geo.

I've hung onto it for yrs.

Just how much money can a business directory make?

Wondering if it is worth developing or if the money is just not really there with about 10G budget to develop.

    The mistake I have seen most is people start a directory that is totally focused on google rankings and pagerank. If you are creating a directory for a local area, it's pretty easy to get a few hundred quality listings showing on a map with the ability for people to write reviews, pay for advertsing, etc. The important part is your plan to get real people using your site. How are you going to get them there? And then when they get there, why would your site help them?

    Answer these questions well, and maybe it is worth investing.

    I imagine you would be better off with a niche directory that is national, than a general directory that is local.

    You could categorise the directory into niches, maybe using subdomains, like attorneys.citynamebusinessdirectory.com . Maybe use the primary domain as a tourist type guide with tons of regional info and useful telephone numbers.

    With the wordpress themes out there that make this type of thing plug and play why would you NOT at least try it? If you were to charge $40 for a yearly listing and can get 1000 "Premium" listings your first year would that not be worth it. Once you have the traffic base to use as leverage you can then sell advertising space. Over time you can increase your yearly rates. There is kinda no reason that in a town such as yours this could not be a $100,000 a year cake walk, and more than potentially more if you stay with it!
