Cold Calls, Cold Calls, and Me on the Receiving End

Got 2 robo-calls today, from 2 different people, My local Google consultant both of them.

Hung up as soon as I heard, Your Local Google... couldn't help hearing consultant.

Got a call from a guy selling websites. I liked this call. He said he was calling to find out if we were in need or wanted a website.

Told him, No.

He said, Thanks, and hung up.

I liked it because it was short and to the point. He sounded professional.
I assume he was looking for the 1 or 2 in 100 that need and want a website now. If that's what he was doing, by now he's found them, I'm sure.

Not the way I like to do things... To easy to say, No.

Next.

I got a call from a woman marketer.

Very good, except at the end. And in the middle.

She called asking to talk to the person in charge of how we look on the internet and compliance.

For a mortgage business, compliance is serious business.

So, I was interested but didn't tell her who is in charge of our web presence... Though it's me. I just didn't feel like it.

I asked her why she's calling.

She said, To tell you you're not in compliance and how. A free tip.

I asked her, what was she trying to sell us.

She said, Nothing. She's just trying to establish if we're a match. And went into how we might not be, making it sound, seamlessly, like she might be too good for us and we'd be lucky if she deigned work with us... In a polite, kind, respectful way.

But she had to speak to the person in charge of our compliance issues and internet.

I said,, Let me ask you...

And she got angry. She said, I called to give you a useful tip. If you're not interested, I'll go and report you to the... and she told me the right US Government agency that deals with mortgage lenders and false advertising, among other things.

What I liked:
She positioned herself better than other cold callers...
She had a darn useful tip (She was right. We did have something on our loan officer's facebook page that was not in compliance... It was minor but, still, it's best to remove. So I removed, and thanked her in my head.)

What I didn't like:
She threatened.
She assumed I was only a gatekeeper and was not friendly.

My point:
1. be friendly, you never know who's answering the phone: I know of a receptionist who's duty is to select marketing channels and business owners who answer the phone as if they were the receptionist;
2. have a darn useful tip... or something akin to it. Even after the threat, when I saw she was right, my first thought was to call her back... Then the rational side of me said, You don't want to work with that kind people, Mister.

And that part of me is right.

3. Be quick to say what you want... If it must be the business owner, have something to the point for the gatekeeper that would make the gatekeeper's job easier... Gatekeeper's job is to transfer you to the business owner.... Really. Gatekeepers keep away time wasters only.

You better hope she didn't take a screen shot of your inaccurate, non-compliant facebook page.
If you happen to get a letter from your industry's watchdog or compliant division, just know she probably did turn you in.

Based on what you've said, you toyed with her by not disclosing your position and she toyed with you by telling you she'd report you. You must admit, that's kinda funny.

As the business owner, it's obvious she knew her stuff but you wanted to pull her chain. I gotta wonder, if it were a male caller, would you have done the same?

To be fair, I'm reading second hand information here. But if she got angry, and threatened you...that's incredible stupid.

Arguing isn't selling. And you almost never make a sale by arguing with the prospect.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Maybe she was frustrated, not angry.

You are reading second hand, but her words were: If you're not interested in what your people do online, I'll contact Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and tell them about your facebook page not being compliant.

What an incredibly stupid thing for her to say.

Stupid enough that I made a note of her company and, should anyone I know think of hiring her, I'll let them know it's not a good idea...
Yeah, I know, I'll forget about her within the week. But, should anyone I know mention hiring her company within the week, I won't let them!

Also, she almost had me... All I wanted when she blurted that out is to check the veracity of her statement about the facebook page having non-compliant info. If it's true, I'm hiring her, was what was going on in my mind... to go check other stuff and clean. And, most likely later for other stuff. You know how it goes!

You know, you never know whom you're speaking to when you call up.

    Case in point:
Recently signed up a SEO client for 2K per month. The whole time I'm on the phone I'm thinking I'm speaking to the gatekeeper except I'm actually speaking to the owner who's acting like the gate keeper.

Also when I was Indianapolis doing insurance restoration I found the largest local real estate company that had AWESOME local branding and presence. Every one in town knew who they were. They had a preferred contractor program and I wanted in!

I set an appointment with the lady in charge of the whole program so I could go in and do the meet and greet pitch.

I arrived and waited a few minutes and was called into an office where I was informed the meeting wouldn't happen because she was to busy.

On my way out I saw a little dish of candy at the receptionist's desk and grabbed a couple pieces. While standing there the receptionist said hello and we briefly chatted and I found out her roof had been denied for hail damage.

I asked her what part of town she lived in and told her absolutely no way her roof missed getting damage and that I'd check her roof if she liked when I left and then get back with her later that evening at her home.

She agreed and gave me her address and said I could meet her after work. So the meeting came and I gave her the low down and she asked me if I was a part of the real estates referral program.

I told her that I had a meeting with the head person earlier that day and that's why I was up at the office. Without any hesitation she piped up, I'm that person you were supposed to meet this morning. I like everything you said and your professionalism so I'm going to fast forward your membership into the program and inform all our agents to only contact you for hail damage inspections. She signed my contract on the spot too. = )

So guys, you never know whom your speaking too so don't make any assumptions.

Threatening is a big NO. That was very unprofessional of the woman. Not a good way to get clients.

    Hello Warriors,

i've got a confession to make. Guess what it is?

    You guys ROCK.

I made two cold calls yesterday and surprisingly got two appointments. Just came out from a meeting with one of the MD's of the companies cold called y'day and things are looking good already.

I've been asked to bring in my proposal and clearly state the amount i want to collect. The MD speaking, said,'' i don't owe people and so before hand i'll like to know what my exposure is''.

The hours i invest here on daily basis is beginning to payoff. Infact, as far as i'm concerned, i won't stop cold calling. Even if i'm rejected with a shout on the phone or a bullet is shot at me via the phone, i'll still be doing it.

Once my Mastercard is loaded, i will have to buy Jason Kanigan's & other materials on cold calling - video, ebook, whatever to beef up my knowledge.

I'm submitting the proposal tuesday next week as agreed with the MD. Moving forward, the MD also told me i might be hiring an Accounts Officer to help run his books.

I appreciate you guys and i'm grateful to be part of this wonderful platform.

I'll be investing more time here, learn more tricks and deploy it with the speed of light.

    God bless you all.

    Regards.
