"I'm not a coward, but this stuff gets scary sometimes. Here's what I mean..."

Hey,

One of the biggest challenges that is rarely acknowledged when it comes to building a successful offline business or consulting practice is fear.

And no I'm not talking about fear of success.

I'm talking about fear of investing money in marketing your consulting business.

It doesn't matter if we're talking about one hundred dollars to get a flyer inserted into your chamber of commerce mailing or a ten dollar facebook ad campaign.

For most consultants, it's scary and causes them to spend another six months running through all the free ways to get clients.

That's tough because paid advertising is head and shoulders above 99.9% of free traffic methods.

That's why it's so easy to get a little jealous of guys like Ryan Deiss, Todd Brown or anybody (guru or not) who has taken the time to build a funnel and then pay to drive traffic through it.

But before those guys got "big-time", they had the courage to spend small amounts of their money on getting eyeballs to their offers, landing pages and websites.

See, in order for you to break through in the remainder of this year, it's going to take real courage to invest your hard-earned money to...

- Split test multiple traffic sources...
- Split test multiple landing pages...
- Split test multiple lead magnets...
- Split test email sequences...
- Split test different offers...

But you have to man up (no offense ladies) and buckle down and do it.

Why?

Because at the end of the day, you want a real consulting business that can generate qualified leads without requiring you to put in 70 hours a week doing cold calls, networking or door to door sales.

Here's my advice.

Start simple and start where you are right now.

Starting with a...

- Basic landing page building software that you already own.
- Basic five to ten topic/paragraph pdf report to giveaway.
- Basic three-seven email sequence in your autoresponder.
- Basic offer page on your current website to drive leads to.
- Basic consulting website you already have setup.

Then, get comfortable with investing at least $10-$20 per day to get eyeballs to your offer through facebook ads or banner ads.

Or you could invest $100-$150 every two weeks to get a flyer inserted into a chamber of commerce mailing.

You probably won't get a "flood of clients" that first go around, but give it at least 60 days of consistent action and I'll guarantee you that you'll start getting calls and emails.

See you at the top,

Chris

I agree, also most of the time cold calls and door to door sales are hideous and you need a lot of training to do this most people in some places are just not eager to listen to a sales person and are looking for the first excuse to tell him they dont need the service

also... if the customers see that you are investing on a marketing campaign they somehow think right away that you are profesional and are seiours about the business

I am about to do it on google, in my country this is not so saturated over high terms so I am about to start something on google and facebook as well

cheers and thanks for the post

Maybe you're approaching it from the wrong mentality. How about trying to find those business owners who ARE ready to hear from someone like you, and quickly dismissing the rest?

I just recently came to to this point 2 days ago. I was tired of getting beat up cold calling businesses with people that "got all my business from referrals" or "everyone knows us" . Focus on the people who are ready is good advice for people who think they can change anyone's opinion .It keeps me grounded and makes my boss happy.

Agreed to the money part. You want to be able to invest in yourself. If you want this to be a business, invest your time at least to learn about this business, learn about different services, and invest in multiple traffic sources.

Invest your time and money into this industry because offline is where it's at for most of us. Make wise investments of course, and still be careful and just a tidy but stingy with your money because you don't want to buy things you don't need.

It's funny when people make posts on here saying "I have $5,000, what do I spend it on to make more money?" If you have the money, be very wise in your investments and try not to buy everything you see that pops up on your screen.

Maybe its just me and how I built my business but the best ROI for me and my money was taking the time to join and simply go to networking meetings, local chamber meetings, and other associations in the area to develop face to face relationships. You only need a few connectors and 1-2 super connectors to start sending business your way which doesn't cost anything. I'm not saying facebook ads and investing money in marketing wouldn't work if its highly targeted towards business to business but face to face with people works best for me in this industry.

Also if your leads are pulling in from ads and marketing you will be competing in most cases with other quotes. Referrals from a trusted source pulls a higher chance of it just being you.

I highly recommend for people to do this if they are serious about it. Once you connect with just two or three people from the industry, it can make the biggest change for you, especially if you are serious about this business and want to make some good connections with people.

I highly recommend getting to small events like eCommerce events and offline networking events because you can really find some great businessmen to work with.

    Thanks for the advice Chris.

You seem like a really knowledgable guy when it comes to consulting. I have a couple friends whome are also in the business and have had a tough time learning the ropes about getting clients to their own businesses

There's fish, and then there's sharks...in these waters

I'll definitely refer them to this post

    all the best
