Here are two simple steps to start.

    1) Post something in your signature that you are a web designer. (Do not Violate and forum rules)

    2) Take out a classified ad in the Warrior forum Classified section under warriors for hire.

Other ideas, Yes- build a website promoting your service. Pay attention to Jason's post http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...1-2-years.html, and learn to Cold Call. Other things to do is join O'desk and other similar service sites. Place local ads in your market.

    Good Luck !

A website by itself is pretty much useless, and you should know that.

Solve a problem for specific people. Your product/service is just a means to solving that problem.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...t-website.html

This guy started with cold calling years ago, and I helped him then. He's not the only one who developed a successful web design agency that way.

Whatever you do, you're sooner or later going to have to talk to people.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...t-selling.html

And if you're a War Room member, this will get you started off right:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/war-room...r-clients.html

Most people begin with a scarcity mindset, pricing that is far too low and attracts poor clients, and never make it past a couple months. But you do not have to begin that way.

Pay attention to what Rick Duris says in this thread:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/offline-...k-my-arse.html

We all suck at the beginning. Expecting otherwise is foolishness, but we do go in thinking we'll be better and it'll be easier than reality bears out.

Here's the key blunt question about starting your own business (my top client, who makes more money than I do, put it to me this way over a year ago):

"Do you have what it takes to get kicked in the head for a full YEAR, so you can learn what you need to learn to succeed?"

Because that's what it's gonna take.

First step is for you to very clearly define what kind of web design business.

Are you just going to take any work you can get? Let life just happen?

Or will you form a clear vision in your head of the type of clients you want, how many clients is ideal, how much money you want in your life and then reverse engineer what you want into the type of business you should have to achieve these goals?

The world does NOT need another "web-design business"
    BUT
somewhere a small niche with money to spend and money to be made with your help
    IF
you create a business and offer that best suits them
will support you in the life you want to lead.

It may sound very pie in the sky to many when we just trying to get the bills paid
but trust me if you can even apply this principle somewhat to your long range planning
you will avoid years of boom and bust and years of eventually owning a business you never wanted in the first place!

Good luck, we can help more if you can become more clear in what you really want to do.

There was a lot of good advice before so i'll just add my 2 cents: Hoping is never something you should focus on in a business.

To answer your question, don't make the site unless you don't have anything else in your portfolio. If you have previous work to show, try to get a customer from your old clients, and if that doesn't work, use some unconventional methods, as cold calling will probably just get to you before you find a client.

The problem is that technically your not exactly a web designer.. you know how to use wordpress and your graphic skills (from what you say) are eh.. I don't know if thats really a web designer. I don't even call myself a web designer but I've programmed platforms similar to wordpress, I can build a site from the ground up, program in perl, and do all of my own advanced photoshop work.. I could rebuild virtually anything out there. Even for me -- its hard to just go out and find clients without warm introductions. My advice -- don't find clients -- its overrated. Just build for yourself and make a living out of your own creations like I have done.

If you like my posts please leave a thanks and message me if you wish for me to follow up with your thread. I enjoy engaging with entrepreneurs and ALWAYS willing to take the time to offer solid answers that you can take to the bank. Internet marketing has made me rich over the last +20 years and this is how I give back to the community for all of those evil popunders I used to sling in the 90s.

      May I add

The benefits of building something for yourself are much more rewarding because you can then focus on your own skill set and not be pressured by the clients every demand.

One thing that drives me nuts is the fact that clients will never be truly satisfied with your work, so your basically risking wasting your time against someone whom may be 50/50 with you at the end of the project

Its better to just work for yourself and build some awesome websites that will give you more profit then a cheap client ever will

"Web Host" and "Designer" loosely for convenience. In truth, to be an actual web host would be a little more involved than what we're going to propose here (though you could still do it with WordPress with plugins like WHMCS MU Provisioning and WHMCS WP Integration). To be clear, however, those plugins are NOT necessary to do what's outlined in this post. Also, we've chosen the term "Designer" here, but in reality, of course you'd be responsible for getting the whole site together, not just the design aspect of it.

the Designer primarily needs to decide if he/she will go after a niche market or whether the target market will be any type of business.

For Designers, however, there is typically another option that isn't usually pursued by Web Hosts, and that's defining your market by location. So, for example, you might sell yourself as a web designer for businesses in XYZ City. Because of the higher income earned initially on each site, you can afford to have fewer clients and give them more personalized service - such as showing up at their offices and teaching them face to face how to do something.
