10% of people don't want to talk to me

Hey there,

I started keeping stats on the people I called.Out of a 100 prospects reached (meaning the people that were actually on the list), 10 basically hung up or said "Awright, thanks have a great day"

I just taught that people hanging up on you were part of the game. But I was a bit surprised that 1 out of 10 didn't want to talk to me. Is that normal?

I'm doing a super salesy intro though, basically I tell them they have been selected to take parts in exceptional offers.

Which for some prospects is true, because usually the offers I have are only found in retention and by doing negotiation and complaining for several hours.

What is your script? If you wouldn't mind posting it, maybe we will be able to point out any issues that we see. It sounds like there could be something that is triggering the hang-up, like a telemarketer red-flag.

      (translated from french)

"Hi this is socialentry calling you from the offices of XYZ telecoms.

You've been selected to take part in exceptional and exclusive promotional offers for cell phones. Do you currently have a cell phone at the moment?"

And then it's into the qualification.

I don't mind posting more, it's just that I really get blocked in the beginning.

      I call residential in quebec.

One of the things that work with residential vrs b2b is humor.

Your half way there ... I literally laughed out loud when i read your script

I'm surprised it as low as 10% given that is a really clear Telemarketer script.

I'd hang up on that. But I'm not your market either.

I'd worry less about the 10% that hang up and more on finding more of the buyers.

Depending on my closing rate vs. time on non-closing calls I might even try to get that hang up percentage higher so I was weeding people out faster.

I'm shocked that just 10% are hanging up when calling residential. I'd be ecstatic if my B2C team had only 10% hang up on them.

Yeah, I'm shocked by the 10% too. I always hang up on a telemarketer. I get between 15 and 25 calls a day from robots and bad telemarketers. If I even listened politely before saying "No" to all of them, It would completely disrupt my day.

My IT guy will occasionally answer the phone, and he will listen to everything, and ask me, in complete earnestness, if I want to talk to the person on the other end. It's so cute.

When I went door to door selling, I was amazed that almost nobody just shut the door in my face. Maybe 5 times in 35 years. At least they would say "I'm sorry, I'm not interested", as they waited for me to say something else.

But I would never let a salesperson (or surveyor) in my home.

But in the very few times I called businesses cold, yeah, it may be 10% that just hang up.
maybe 40% said "No, we're not interested right now"...and one of us hung up then. But that amazes me. I want them to hang up. It's faster. I would pay good money if I could make 50 dials, hear 49 clicks...not talk to anyone...and then get one live interested prospect. It would be sooo profitable.

Ten percent? That is low. You are doing well with that script.

10% is VERY low. I would ALWAYS hang up on a script like that.

As everyone else said... 10% is good. Almost sounds too good for b2c. So I wouldn't worry about it. Concentrate on having 9 USEFUL conversations, and work on turning those into profit.

Some people still don't have caller ID at home in 2014?

If a known name doesn't popup on my phone it doesn't get answered, they either hang up or talk to voice mail.

Maybe change your sales pitch to promote phones that have caller ID so the homeowner doesn't have to listen to a sales pitch, after your sales pitch of course, lol.

10% is pretty low. Just a couple more tweaks and not sounding too much like it's top secret may help.
