Using Adwords for Local Keyword Research - Struggling a Bit

So I'm doing some keyword research to set up offline lead gen/site rental sites in a couple of industries. Until now I've focussed on where I live (London). But I have a friend who is a mortgage broker in Swansea (where I am from) and thought maybe I could see about helping him (both for profit and to be a test case).

The issue I am having is keyword research. So I go into the Google Keyword Planner, set the target area to Swansea and put in my keywords. The number seemed far too low, so I looked at the map. Turns out that it only covers the center of Swansea, so I tried to use the "add nearby locations" option, but it doesn't find any.

Swansea has significant urban sprawl (typical Welsh valleys), and 90% of the population isn't covered by the area the keyword planner is covering. I'm not interested in adding all of Wales, I want to keep this targetted (and frankly London is closer than North Wales in terms of travel time).

Is there any way of extending the map so I get a better idea of what sort of lead volume I may be able to generate?

Wasn't 100% sure if this should be here or in PPC forum, but as it is keyword for offline work and I know this forum has lead gen/site rental people I thought it seemed as good a place as any, my apologies if not

For your UK map I tried to grab the whole area but not all of wales and was able to only target larger of towns nearby

    Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom
    Llanelli, Wales, United Kingdom
    Port Talbot, Wales, United Kingdom
    Neath, Wales, United Kingdom

You may need to go with this for your search area.

I live in Texas near the Mexico border. My Keyword planner sees my area as Rio Grande Valley 100 miles east west 60 miles north south It is possible to target 4 cities of 80K + but that limits the market.

Thanks for that. So essentially Google makes it impossible. Llanelli, port Talbot et all, misses some of the densest population areas (or at least the majority of the suburbs) whilst retaining only the inner city portions.

Appreciate the help, good to know the limitations of the systems!
