Do you work with restaurants?

A restaurant in NYC decided to end the mystery of why so many online reviews said their service was slow. From experience, they knew their service was fast. So what gives?

Technology, my friend.

Not shocking, I work with a couple of different restaurants so I am in and out on a regular basis, and the amount of time that people spend on their phones is outrageous. We have made it a point that when we go out, our phones do not come out unless it rings, and is only answered if needed. Phones have taken over, and unfortunately, the same people that are complaining are the same ones that are the main culprits.

I find it amusing that the restaurant seems to want to change this behavior. The biggest mistake a business owner can make is to fight a trend!

Instead, they have produced valuable insight that can be used to increase business. Use the trend to their advantage. I see an opportunity here for marketers to help set up a system for restaurants to use.

Since people want to take pictures of food - put up posters or table tents telling people to take a pic and tag the restaurant for a free dessert! Talk about cheap publicity.

Create a camera solution for servers to take to every table, asking if people would like a group photo. Post the photo to social media - and give people a card that tells them where they can go to find the photo and share with their connections. Of course, the photo should have the restaurant logo with a link so when it is shared...the advertisement goes with it! This could easily be set up with some automation tools and a dedicated laptop in the office. Run a USB cable to a common area, and when the camera is plugged in, the photos are automatically downloaded, watermarked, uploaded to social media channels, and deleted from the camera.

People want to use the Wifi...great! Setup a "pay with a tweet" or Facebook like before they can access any pages. Just like many public wifi providers...you gotta open a page on a browser before you can use the net. Just make people like the page or tweet it out or do a facebook share that says "I am eating at..." with a link to the restaurant page.

People are taking too long to decide what to eat. Well...the host should get some extra menus, and then ask people when they check-in if they would like to take a menu to begin looking at some of the choices. During peak hours someone should stop through the lobby and ask people if they have questions about the menu. Ask them what they have tried in the past and what they are in the mood for tonight.

Sure this stuff will take time to setup and will cost some money - but is it more expensive than the bad reviews? Asking customers to change their behavior is very short sighted.

Great contrarian and forward-looking recommendations here, Dan!

My initial response would have been the authoritarian "turn the damn wifi off" and trying to get things back the way they were 10 years ago. And I have to admit your response is much, much better.

A story this made me think of is at the beginning of the following talk. Simon Sinek of "Start With Why" fame begins with a quick anecdote about women in the mid-1700s dying right after childbirth in these new-fangled hospitals. The reason why they were dropping dead a few days after giving birth, and the reaction to the doctor who figured it out are very revealing about human nature

Another option would be just to have a host walk around every hour and take group pics of everyone.

I could see someone developing a real system around this. A standard laptop setup with a script that is easy to copy to more laptops, with a long USB cable and simple camera.

The whole package is $2950 for full installation and training of the host staff, plus $379/monthly maintenance/lease contract to make sure everything keeps running correctly with less than 24 hour response time to fix issues.

The equipment remains property of the marketer, the restaurant is just leasing. If there are errors, you can remote in to the laptop first to do any quick fixes. If it is broken, you just take a new one to the location.

Someone (not me) could create this system and sell it over and over. This would have real value to a local business.

Not just restaurants - water parks, bars, night clubs, smoothie/health food stores, competitions, sporting events - the options are endless.

This is a full business for someone to launch!

Awesome share . I actually enjoyed this article very much. To think about the statistics of people worrying about WiFi at a restaurant or taking pictures of the food . Instead why don't you just converse with your date ,friends, family . I do not like where this is heading.
