Yes sales job is much better than education because in school they don't study how to earn money. As you we can see most of successful entrepreneur are college dropouts, but this doesn't mean they don't know nothing. Most knowledgeable persons were self educated and which gaining it from their mistakes.

      Social mobility?

You mean, which sounds better at parties? Which sounds more impressive to upper middle class people?

Education, hands down. And with a higher education, you gain social skills that you can use in sales.

But asking about social mobility? What do you mean by that? Why is that important?

Education by a country mile. In every country on the planet.

It gives you greater choice in life.

Want to be a Doctor, Lawyer, Bus Driver, Pilot, Architect, Sales Rep etc etc an Education allows you to choose any of them (whilst not being strictly necessary for some)

But a lack of Education immediately cuts down on your choices. Cabbie, Retail Worker, Bus Driver fine. Doctor, Chemical Engineer etc you are a bit stuck.

That is why Education is important.

Education is the bunch of keys to unlock the doors. Once inside it is your attitude that counts.

        Why the question?

This is simply not true. Most entrepreneurs have a college degree. This is based on hard data, though I don't have the source right in front of me.

People always talk about Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and the two Google guys as examples of successful people who dropped out of college.

Bill Gates - dropped out of Harvard. A very hard school to get into. He already had a history of accomplishment and cannot be compared to most people.

Steve Jobs - Simply cannot be compared to most of us. This was a truly exceptional human being.

Elon Musk - Yes, dropped out of Stanford. But first got a BS in physics from the University of Pennsylvania, a BS in economics from Wharton, then was accepted to a PhD physics program at Stanford which he did not complete. This is an exceptional human being. Yes, technically a dropout.

Google Guys - Dropped out the Stanford PhD computer science program - arguably the most difficult CS program to get into. These are exceptional people.

Mark Zuckerberg - Dropped out of Harvard. Very exceptional person.

By definition, most people are average. That includes entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs above are not average and should not be used as a measuring stick for most people.

Unless a person is achieving at a high level before 20, or are getting accepted into elite schools, they should probably go to college.

I used to be one of the people who said it isn't necessary. But after completing my undergrad, I am now in a masters program, and my life and business have benefited in a major way.

Sure, sales jobs are great and most people will achieve more if they have completed a degree. It is really the first educational thing that adults have the option of ignoring. Deciding not to ignore it is a good decision.

Besides, sales and college are not mutually exclusive. I'd wager that a large portion of the most highly paid sales people have college degrees.
