Is it possible to hire a decent telemarketer now?

I've seen the ads on odesk and freelancer but I am pretty sceptical.

I've written a good script and occasionally call myself but to be honest have very limited time for this and frankly would rather pay someone to do it for me.

Thanks
Tom.

  • It's a lot of work. "Good script" for you could be a terrible script for a telemarketer. I've hired and used a lot of telemarketers (maybe around 100?) and it's always a mixed bag. They burn out quickly and they're a lot of work to manage, but in volume they can definitely do well, especially depending on the niche.

Even if you have to pay more for someone local, a lot of times you'll get a better ROI that way.

Thanks but as a first post this smells a bit dodgey.

Yeah I wouldn't have a huge budget for it, so wouldn't want to wait to long to find a decent one so ROI is 100%+

You could always use Craigslist. I know, not the best thing to do, but instead of having to pay them per hour, you can instead pay them per sale they make. This makes it easier on you to not have to worry about spending so much on them. I know CL may not seem great, but if you advertise in other countries like in the Philippines for example, you'll get tons of people. After working with all kinds of different people, you'll eventually find that one or two people who have a good knack for sales and may end up being perfect for an hourly job.

One issue with CL is that you will be hiring someone in the US. How do you handle the tax issue? Do you simply issue them a 1099?

I think it depends largely on what you sell and your current sales history. For example, a good telemarketer realistically expect to make a sale per X number of call. If you offered commission only, what would your offer be, and would a sales rep be able to make a living doing sales for you? If you answer yes to all of these, you might find some good options with sales reps that are already used to work as 1099 reps.

telemarketers are out there - 2 a penny - difficult to distinguish who is good - unless if you can obtain previous results from over the last 3-6 months

look for a results based package - so you only pay them when you see results

    hope this helps

To answer your question - YES it is possible to get a good telemarketer.

The challenge is finding them, and asking the right questions.

Having run a brokerage firm in Central London with great success, I found that the best people had immense chips on their shoulders and a desire to prove themselves.

If you can uncover a punchy personality with a desire to really draw in results - then you'll have it made.

I can't list all the questions that you could ask them, as this is beyond the scope of this thread - but what I will say i that you could possibly reverse engineer your questions based on the characteristic traits of successful sales people (google them).

    Hope this helps mate

    cheers
