Targeting small businesses in the Construction and Real Estate industries? Any advice?

OFFLINE MARKETING

Hi,

We are a start up in the process of finishing our website and are considering targeting small businesses in the construction and real estate industries. We will provide online bookkeeping services.

Does anybody have any experience of marketing and selling to small businesses in these two industries?

And do you have any advice?

All advice and suggestions will be well received.

Expect them to be busy. You will need to 'keep trying' to reach them. Call early in the morning, right at the start of lunchtime, or expect not to reach them.

You could try later in the afternoon as well, but then they might be tired & grumpy.

Get in-person meetings if you can, especially with the construction niche. These go a long way for developing rapport, which is important for that niche.

  I would say you should make a few safe assumptions about who you are calling and be ready to tell they WHY they should spend their money with you.
  
  First, let's define what you mean by "small businesses". If you are thinking about the small mom & pop types, then here is where I would start....
  
  Expect them to already be using QuickBooks or QuickBooks online.
  
  Expect them to have a VERY small budget to spend on bookkeeping - if any at all. And when I say "small", I mean less than $300 per month.
  
  Expect them to already be getting calls from companies like yours as well as from SEO companies, Web Design Companies, Yellowpages, and other advertising related companies.
  
  That sounds like one big headache to me. But hey, maybe it will work for you.

I sympathize with anyone trying to get in bed with real estate companies. Such a hassle.
