Plenty of people have success posting in newspapers and magazines.

Just make sure what you're selling is relevant to the magazine.

You don't want to put a tampon ad in Men's Fitness.

The problem is to find a magazine that not only fits with your needs, but also you should know that this magazine has an audience that approves ad's cost. So be careful with this.

If your target market reads them, then you are in the right place.

You can run the ads in places normally not used by other oil advertisers.

Example, a bed store runs ads in 22 places where ads for beds aren't normally seen.,
like under chiropractor listings. A person with back pain is probably not getting
      a very good nights sleep.

First step is to go back into your customer base and think through who
your best customers are. If you've got a great relationship with them,
ask to get together and shout them lunch and ask them what you could do better,
what you are doing right and what type of things do they read.

Then you think through what they needed to know before they bought..

Was there a timing element in the buying decision?

That's all for now, gotta go.

newspaper ads still work for many people. read the classifieds 10 weeks in a row and the ads that you see still showing week after week are the ones that are making a profit advertising. then just reverse engineer what they are selling.

print ads also work great when mailed... but find a doorhanger or flyer distribution crew and you could be looking at even cheaper prices than the lowest possible postage!

finally i would agree with previous poster when saying it matters a great deal what you are targeting. not all businesses can advertise door to door or in newspapers simply because their target markets are too thin in those mediums without better targeting.

obviously you are asking this because you have something in mind... what are you considering advertising with print exactly?

I tried an ad last Summer in a local paper but did not run it long enough to show any results
I have a suggestion since you are selling Amsoil. ever heard of AARN in Trenton NJ or visited SJDR online ? One is a newspaper the other is a Bulletin Board. These places will have a decent target audience. Here is a link to SDJR They are looking to fill a banner ad South Jersey Dirt Racing -- The original NJ internet racing source!

If you are going down this road test small, a quarter page ad 4 times may be better than a full page.

Do some research on where ads are best seen.

    Find out the print deadline

Never pay rate card (especially if you know the print deadline) before we came a media seller i would often phone up late and ask what they had left before telling them my budget. I'm sure its one reason they gave us the deal.

Generally i discourage most clients from print media but it does work for some industries.

My personal experience with print ads is that they work. you don't have to wait to run the ad 3 or 4 times. It works, or it doesn't.

If you are going to run an ad in a newspaper, run it the first week solid all 7 days. keep track of when you get calls. During the call determine when they saw your add. Then you can start isolating when exactly to run the add, and focus more on those days.

It could be that your paper has a added "Car" section on say Thursday. I personally do very well on the day that the Food Section comes out, and on Saturdays. I do very poorly on Sundays, but that is the day that the National Advertisers have the full color drop in brochures.

That's very good advice...to getting the best ad rates in print media. They would rather offer a greatly discounted rate than run with empty ad space.

Also, if you are considering fractional page ads...it has been proven a hundred fold, that the most effective placement is right hand side of page and above the fold.

Yes, I have had some success running offline ads...but it varies depending on the niche. You really have to test and be more patient with newspaper and magazine ads because they tend to take longer than online techniques to generate traffic - and many marketers pull the plug before results get a chance to kick in. For example, I ran some ads in papers and no results until like 4 - 8 weeks in and then everyone just starts jumping on the offer - weird but true.

By rate card do you mean their standard pricing?

      Yep. He does.

Are you targeting consumers or shops?

You also might look into banner ads on relevant web sites. The right ones can be a good ROI.
