My Name is Michael Gehring, I’m the owner of 2 Guys Tree Service in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I’ve been doing marketing online for almost 10 years now and I started doing local marketing before Google Local (now Google My Business) even existed.

Right now 80% of people look for products and services online.

Right now, Google Local is in its prime and people are calling service businesses that are on the first page of those results. 18% click the number one spot, versus 10% to number 2 and 7% to number 3.

Right now, mobile use is growing 20% per year. People are using phones and tablets to search for service businesses and local results are most often what they are seeing when they search so Google Local is the place to be for small businesses, but you have to be on the first page, preferably the number one spot.

Most service businesses need a constant supply of new customers to stay in business. Web designers, roofers, plumbers, welders, arborists, lawyers, doctors, dentists, carpet cleaners, window cleaners, lawn mowers, snow removers, constructions folks, well and septic people, the list is endless. Every good authority site has a directory, and for the last several years I’ve been compiling lists of service businesses in the United States. I have millions of businesses in my database.

Lists that would cost you thousands of dollars by themselves from list services.

Over the years I’ve looked at many different directory software sites and didn’t find any that did what the top ranking sites on the internet did both with the content and on the SEO side. Over the past 10 years I’ve done internet marketing in some of the most competitive industries online like mortgages, real estate, and beauty products. It seems like I’ve sold everything online from adult diapers to T-slotted aluminum framing.

I got out of selling products online because I got tired of manufacturers calling me and threatening to cut off my supplier if I didn’t stop out-ranking them on the search engines and selling their products online.

Service businesses are great to market online because no one is ever going to call me up and threaten to put me out of business because I out-rank them for “tree service”.

But I’ll be honest with you. A year ago, I knew what I did to market 2 Guys Tree Service was working for me, but I couldn’t have told you definitively that the directory sites were the major factor in getting the kind of results that I got.

So I stopped.

I didn’t do anything on my own website for a year. We dropped to number 2 in the organic results right under Pence Tree Service after they redid their entire website last winter. No change in calls, and just a slight drop in quote form submissions on the website.

Then, I let my directory website’s hosting lapse. They went dead. No site, no pages, nothing. Two months later call volume dropped to what my friends in the business told me they were getting. I was still number one in the local results, but I wasn’t number one all over the city and in all the outlying areas we served.(I searched for “tree service” and “tree removal” from area coffee shops, McDonald’s, and Bob Evans and got different results than I got from my office.)

I let that go for a month partly because it was mid-summer and I was busy doing trees, even though it hurt a bit financially and quote calls remained slow.

Then, I started putting up my old websites with a new design and very quickly quote calls picked back up.

After that I put up new websites targeting specific local areas like New Haven, Indiana. I put up a site targeting New Haven on a Saturday. That Monday, we got two calls from people in New Haven wanting a quote for tree removal and another wanting firewood.

We have never gotten 3 requests from New Haven in the same day ever before. (All my stuff goes into a database so that I can track it.)

This isn’t a very scientific test, but I don’t think you have to be a genius to see that either these are some pretty specific results or some very big coincidences.

Now quote volume is back where we want it for now and we are sitting pretty again.

Over the past year and a half I’ve also helped out a couple of SEOs and built these websites for them.

They have used an earlier version for their clients and are very happy with the results.

They got a cosmetic dentist in West Hollywood, California to the top of the Google Local results for Los Angeles using their usual SEO mix plus my directory software.

This is an interesting WSO offer. I enjoyed reading the sales page. However, I am little confused about the purpose of the sites and have a couple of questions.

Are the sites used to make money from....ads, leads, payment from businesses in the directory, etc? Or, are they used for linking to other sites I may own? I ask because, you talked about ranking your business site #1 with directory sites, but I don't see any of the actual example sites ranking on the first page.

Are the sites you build for me going to rank on the first page of google for the related subject niche?

Was the attorney site making any money before it was sold?

Thanks for the kind words. When you get ranked for service work, the people searching want options, that's why they come to you. But it works very much like it does directly on the search engines. Most people click the number one listing, or call the phone number like I have it on the tree service sites. Much less people click the second or third, barely anyone scrolls down.

So being in that top spot for free does a few things for you. It gives you credibility, because they don't know it's your site. And it gives you most of the traffic.

We did some experimenting a long while back with directory sites versus the "micro-sites" that most people do, and found we got more response from people on directory sites that seemed unbiased versus a micro-site that's all about one company.

Maybe you'll lose some work to someone else on the list, but most people are basically lazy and as long as you answer the phone when they call you, they'll feel like they've accomplished something and stop looking for someone else.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard from customers that they were going to get other quotes, but we got back with them fast and they liked us so we got the job.

They can be. I did have a site I put up for tree service in Atlanta Georgia that I sold listings on.

I had an auto shop directory a couple years ago that I put a Advance Auto Parts store on (through Commission Junction) and made good commissions from selling auto parts. You could do the same with amazon, clickbank, Commission Junction and others.

I send tree leads to other tree businesses in my area. You could probably arrange some type of commission with most service businesses. I have a car dealership in the area that will give me $100 per person I send them that person buys a car.

Some business owners who have bought sites from me don't feel like managing another website even though they could make good money on it, so they just link to their website from the directory website and do what little it takes to keep them in the top 2 pages like I do with my tree sites.

The sites I put up for examples were either mine for trees that I don't do much with, or examples of other lists I have that I put up to get people thinking about what would work for them.

As far as ranking the websites on Google, that's easy and up to you. My tree sites are almost always on the first page and I do nothing for them. I've found that you have to have at least 3 pages of decent content to get ranked well. After that it depends on how much competition you have, and at some point, depending on how competitive things are, everything else you do is overkill.

Here's a well known, but little remembered secret, you probably haven't thought about since before Google Local changed local marketing. When someone is looking for service work, they generally want options. Which is the whole purpose of Google Local. But before Local there were directory sites and in A LOT of industries, in A LOT of markets, when you search for a service all you get are directory sites.

That's because Google knows that's what people want. Options, reviews, content that helps them make better decisions, that's what gets a directory site ranked. And many service businesses or SEO's for service businesses will write it for you, just for being featured. (Many SEO's still do a lot of directory site submissions.)

But directory sites get traffic for all the business names too, I get good traffic from other companies business names. That's why there's a listings dashboard in the back end that tells you the most visited pages. Those are the people you should market to first and knowing who people are looking for on your site makes it all a lot easier.

I never did anything with the attorney site at all. I put it up and used it to test my software. I got some ad revenue, but it probably wasn't much. It got listed on a few websites for being a great attorney directory site and over 200 people signed up. (I have no idea how they found it.) More than a few bought memberships even after I sold it because the guy that bought it didn't change the paypal email address right away.

Just some ideas for you. These sites are very powerful, very flexible, and very easy to make money with.

Hello, very interesting offer. If I understand you each site would have a business directory relevant to the type of industry it is based on but the business of its owner features top. The directory ...boosts the authority of the site... Can you do this for none US residents?

It depends on your area and what kind of list you want. PM me and I'll check to see if I can get the list before you buy a site or sites.

If I can find a professional organization that has a directory I can usually get the list from there. I got a hand surgeons list from a website. Also some types of clubs have lists available. I've had a few requests for that sort of thing. In general if it's in the phone book I can get it, if it's in the US I can get it, and if I can find another directory website, I can usually get the list even if it's protected from viewing the source of the web page.

For lists I can't get easily or have to write software to get, I charge for the list itself, usually somewhere between $100 and $500 dollars depending on how much work it is to get.

If you are using your own domain and hosting I would have to do some testing and make sure that everything works with that setup. Every hosting company is different in the way IIS is set up, how mail works, and I have to have external database access. It may be that everything works out of the box, but you would still want me to check and make sure everything works, right?

I originally hosted these sites on my own servers, and everything worked great, but both GoDaddy and Arvixe have different settings for how IIS is set up, the web.config files are different, and email is relayed in GoDaddy's case, so I had to make some changes to make it work on their servers several of which took days to figure out and fix. (If you've ever called GoDaddy tech support (which is an oxymoron) you can understand why.)

It can be tedious and time-consuming. I'm not against using your hosting at all, but there's no discount. Just make sure it's ASP.Net 4.0 and Microsoft SQL Database with at least 50 MB of file space on the web server.

No matter what hosting you have, using your own domain name isn't a problem at all. Still no discount, because GoDaddy gives you a free domain name when you buy hosting.
