Facebook Ads question for experts (kinda advanced?)

I've been placing Facebook ads and targeting people who have "liked" the fan pages of my competitors.

But I've noticed that I'm not able to show ads on some of my competitors even though they have fan pages on Facebook.

I type their fan page names into the field but nothing comes up, whereas it does for most of my competitors.

And that struck me as a smart thing to do --- to somehow turn OFF the ability of others to target my fans for my competitors' ads.

So my question is: How can I do that? Is there a setting that allows other to NOT target my fan page as a targeted interest?

Hope that makes sense and thanks for your help.

There's no way to turn off the Interests. Facebook determines whether people are able to target your fan page or not and it's all done behind the scenes.

Wow, really?? That seems crazy and random to me. I wonder what their criteria is.

        Hi BillyBee,

Facebook has never been known to lookout for their users much less their advertisers. IMO they generally are not very transparent in their methods, and their motives are always centered on what's best for themselves, never on their users or advertisers. It seems the only way to get them to act in the interest of users is to shame them or pressure them with negative publicity.

To use an analogy, I like to think of them as I would an opponent in a realtime strategy game. As an advertiser on Facebook it is best, IMO, to consider them a rival that you team up with to conquer yet another rival. You have to watch your back with them as you never know when they are going to decide it's time to turn on you and make you their rival.

Having said that, the issue is that they seem to deliberately withhold a percentage of traffic for purposes that suit them. They offer far less control to advertisers than other popular platforms. Which allows them to monkey around with a whole bunch of behavior modification experiments they have going on at all times. You, or your targeted audience, could be part of a control group, or test variant. We are all just guinea pigs for their experiments.

Maybe you can use a tool to scrap IDS from the page and then advertise to them. Have you done it?
