Hi guys,

I'm asking the most experienced internet marketers here one question: Is AdWords PPC worth the time and money in terms of efficiency for advertising a small business? I'm talking about the quality of leads you getting.

What other options (cheaper options) are out there. I'm not a rich guy

thanks,
Emil

    Depends on the business.
Keep in mind you need a budget set aside to filter out UN-effective keywords, placements and creatives.
Based on your vertical testing budget alone can in the range of $1k - $10k.

If your a small business why not utilize FB?
Connect with your current customers friend base. Nothing beats referrals.

Adwords is good for almost any kind of business, yet if you don't have the budget it will probably not be worth it for you. Facebook is also an option...

Thank you all guys, I'm already trying AdWords... and is damn expensive. I raised my bid to $2/click just to have my ads showing on the network. No clicks yet because the ads are showing on 6th or 7th spot.

As jasonweb said, AdWords makes a little more sense... however I've heard cases when business ran out of budget because the competition was clicking on their ads just to screw them up.

What's your opinion about those networks that offer 1 cent/click ads? Do you know any?

    cheers,
    Emil

The way the system works, this is impossible. Chalk it up to another persistent myth.

PPC is part science, part art. Done right, you will get quality leads.

Adwords works for every business if done right. But in order to help you out here, you need to share some more information about the business.

      Hi svetod,

Thanks for offering to help (with whatever possible). I'm new, actually very new to AdWords PPC.

My small business is a "Canadian business directory" ( bizbook.ca ) , just started in November.. and I'm looking to get it off the ground. The Basic membership is free, and includes all features: Canadian Local Business Directory

Let me know what you think

      Regards,
      Emil

Yes, but you can't just throw money around, especially when you are a small business competing with more established and well optimized campaigns.

As the game get harder, the player need to get smarter.

    Otherwise, you are seriously screwed.

Many thanks to all of you guys. I just raised the question (about the false clicks in adwords) because I read some inconsistent (to say the least) articles about this topic. As advanced as Google is... is kind of common sense that would not be possible.

It all boils down to ad management. If you are or you have a skilled ad manager then AdWords dances circle around Facebook for "targeted" leads, because you are getting people who are searching for something not trying to get away from life or stress. Facebook is the net's water cooler.

I spent $100 in a week on a facebook ads and $100 in a week on Google. Same ad. Destination for both was on on facebook.

To my amazement my I not only got more impressions but what surprised me most is my ctr was higher on Google and I had 10k more impression from Google than Facebook.

I am now leveraging my ads with remarketing and this is so cost effective I cannot believe it. I just spent $150 only in a month and got a 20% click through rate increase and a huge list of people seeing my ad which cost me nothing once trigger.

Unless I can find something else more flexible and with full control I place my bet on Google for sending me quality clicks provided I use the right negative keywords and keep my content relevant to my ads.

btw I run a small local ad agency and I would not advise someone to do what I am unwilling to do.

Look at it this way. If the return on investment is high I don't worry about the cost, My concern is how much it's going to make me.

Has anyone checked out Godaddy? They spend over $100,000 per month on Google ads. But what most don't know is that's what shot them to number 1 in the beginning and they suck as a hosting company. So go figure. That was their main advertising method.

And now, because they do remarking that adspend value had shot up to 3 quarters of a million dollars in value per month.

If you don't have time to get a good marketing campaign together Google appears to be the logical choice.

So again I look at the return I get not the amount I spend.

Hope that helps some bizbook. Master the tool and it works for you.

7search is somewhat good.. It helps those that can't get ads approved to run on Google.
they don't have the volume, but they're not bad.

    Cheers

  • Hi Emil.

I'm guessing you want to monetize by having businesses pay for their listing. How many do you think will do that? How much does it cost? Is it a monthly fee and how many months will a business pay on average? The answer to these questions will help in answering questions such as what your bids should be.

Your original post asked about options and preferably cheaper. What did you do in Adwords, which keywords, and how much did it cost? My guess is, like most newbies at it, you simply did it wrong and that increased your costs.

I also see a chicken and egg thing here. You need to have people use and search for businesses, otherwise, businesses are not going to pay. So the way I see it, the problem is two-fold: the need to bring users and businesses.

It's not about the CPC you are paying (or want to pay). It's about the quality. If you used the wrong keywords, paying $1 or $0.01 is not going to help nor if you use the wrong ad or your landing page does not convert.
