Getting Google ads to work with a low traffic niche?

Hi guys,

I'm having real trouble getting any of my keywords to show due to low search traffic. I've done a couple of adwords courses and have tailored my keywords to be very specific to users I believe will buy my product. I've got proper location targeting and a suitable negative keyword list in place as well.

My issue is, if I make the terms more broad I end up with lots more low quality traffic that doesn't convert, simply costing me money for no pay off.

I've used the same tactics in a slightly wider niche with decent success but this smaller niche doesn't seem to have the right amount of the kind of traffic I need.

Does anyone have any suggestions into things I could try to improve this? Or perhaps I just need to try something other than Google ads for this niche? If so, do you have any suggestions?

Go broader but have various ads where you change the copy to target the keywords you think are going to work

So for example the broad term could be Foot problems" and the copy could be "How to Remove an Ingrown toenail in 3 easy steps"

The ads will show but only target audience will click ad.

Well, it's only be a couple of days but as a follow up I seem to be getting a lot more impressions now though the CTR is really low. I guess that's the be expected using this technique. Thanks again!

Oziboomer hit the nail on the head. Excellent suggestion. While the low CTR is concerning, you've made a step in the right direction. At this point, I'd probably continue to tinker with your strategy to find the perfect balance of increased exposure with a respectable CTR.

      Hi bigja99,

Now that you have gone broader in your keywords, and receiving impressions, you can begin analyzing that data to gain insights into what will work for your targeted audience. One of the great things about broad terms is that it will help you to discover many of the variations of search terms that you audience is currently using.

You need to discover the actual terms your audience is using to find your product/service. You will want to add those keywords to your ad groups where appropriate.

Not all of your the search terms triggering your ads will be relevant so you will need to add negative keywords to prevent the irrelevant terms from triggering ads. What you need to do is review the Search terms report for your campaign's keywords.

Are you currently getting any traffic? Why don't you monetize it with Google Re-marketing?

@dburk thanks for that, makes a lot of sense. It seems like my target audience is basically searching for the most generic, broad term in the niche. I'm sure I have used that keyword throughout the website copy but I'm up against the big players with that one so don't think I have a chance of ranking. Plus it's quite expensive to get a click and my ad's are appearing way down the page for that term.
I'll take a look through the video, thanks again!

      Hi bigja99,

Quality Score is the small advertiser's great equalizer. You can compete against bigger advertisers if you focus on keyword Quality Scores, and practice CRO on your landing pages.

A big factor in your ad position, and CPC, is your keyword Quality Score. By reviewing the Search Terms Report and adding negative match keywords for irrelevant search terms, and add relevant search terms as keywords within a tightly focused ad group that has ads written specifically for those search terms, you will improve your Quality Scores.

It's not just the keywords, but how compelling your ad text is to your targeted audience.Be sure to create multiple ads for each ad group, testing different selling points to see which your audience will respond to the best.

You can compete with the big advertisers as long as you focus on all the details of a well optimized ad campaign. If you are lazy, and not willing to do things right, it doesn't matter the size your competitors are going to trounce you.
