Hi all,

Anyone know of any good sources that would help me find out if certain companies are doing any SEM or SEO. I looked into SEMrush and spyfu and was wondering if there were any free sources?

Thanks in advance.

  • Semrush does work for free, sure you are limited in the amount of info you can gain daily and reports are much shorter, but it works for the price

to analyze competitors I use ahrefs and google search. In most cases they give nice picture of the competitors' strategies, however, there are instruments that can't be detected with services like redirections, frames and other methods.

usually I just assess the level of internal optimization of competitors, assuming that external optimization skills of a specialist can't be great if his internal optimization is poor.

  • To analyse other peoples ads..

    Use https://www.whatrunswhere.com/domain...omain=(Website url)

    For example:

    https://www.whatrunswhere.com/domain...fusionsoft.com

    Hope this helps

I am using Open Site Explorer for tracking my competitors and it is the best platform to find out what your competitors are doing.

I guess the backlinks is the most obvious way of knowing.

I'll chime in about SpyFu free access. You can search any domain (or longer URL) or keyword in our search bar for free. That's not a trial, either. You can do it as many times as you want for as long as you want. The results shown are limited, though. That means that if you're trying to see if certain companies are doing any search marketing, you would just type in their domain and get a quick (and free) site overview for both PPC and SEO.

Free tools like compete + Alexa can approximate the amount of traffic your competitors’ websites see within a given month and trended over time. Spikes in volume can indicate when they run paid media, possibly in support of a promotion. Secondly, you can get a backlinks report to see the quality and quantity of backlinks your competition has accrued. Opensiteexplorer.com is a free tool (with some limitations) that can give you a good picture of how committed your competition is to expanding search engine optimization (SEO) initiatives.
