    It doesn't actually matter whether it's "allowed", because it would be such a bad idea anyway.

    It can't make much sense to pay for PPC traffic and not even try to retain any of it, can it? That would be like trying to fill the bathtub by opening the taps fully and paying for the water, but without remembering to put the plug in the hole first. You'd lose almost everything, almost immediately.

    If it were possible to promote affiliate products successfully that way, don't you think vendors would be doing that rather than paying affiliates up-to-75% commissions just for sending the traffic?

    Here's the thing: to earn significant money from affiliate marketing, you need to do three things ...

    (i) Keep your potential customers returning to the sales page (because almost nobody buys anthing much at their first visit to a sales page!);

    (ii) Make increasing sales (ideally at progressively higher prices) to the same "captive audience" who regularly rely on and trust your recommendations;

    (iii) Establish the credibility and trust necessary to do both the above by earning's people respect as a provider of niche-related information.

    Without building lists, of course, you can't do any of the three and you'd just be throwing away almost all the traffic you ever generate that doesn't buy anything immediately. What kind of way to run a business would that be?

    For most people, most of the time, it's just about as simple as that, overall.

    These three threads are more informative ...

    Is it a good idea to spend some time on building a mailing list ?

    Without Building a List, How Consistent is Your Income from Affiliate Marketing

    Does anyone even make money online without an email list?

        And just think how much more they'd be making, if they weren't leaving most of the money on the table. It's one of those things - there are many in internet marketing - with which many people "know some people who say they do it profitably" but apparently nobody much actually does it successfully themselves. It's always "my cousin's friend's cousin's friend's cousin makes his living this way", rather than "I make my living this way and I'll show you all the details, right now" (the people saying that are trying to sell us something, aren't they?). I'm not saying that you can't make your living that way; simply that if you did, you'd still be wasting most of the available money, and it still wouldn't make any sense.

        It's not that it isn't possible to do at all.

        But the marketers that seem to ask about it the most have little experience. It is a sure fire way to see no sales and get discouraged right out of the gate.

        If you are very experienced with PPC and can select excellent keywords that draw traffic, convert and don't cost an arm and a leg then you may find some direct link type campaigns work well.

        But if you do not have a lot of PPC experience you can use to quickly evaluate campaigns in order to shut the ones that are bad and pump the ones that are good you will fare far worse.

        If looking at a page table of 100 ad campaigns just looks like a spreadsheet of numbers, you are doomed.

        The newbie mentality is: send 1,000 cheap penny clicks at an offer "hoping" that if even 1 in 1,000 converts you made some money.

        The more experienced mentality is: pour piles of money down the drain refining campaigns until you see a tiny profit then scale.

        Kidding, a bit.

        But newbies always say "someone told me they make bank doing this" without really understanding what "this" is.

    You know, Alexa, at some point you just have to let these guys post their direct links so they can come back to WF with something else to complain about (no sales).

    Although, I know it's your personal crusade to teach new marketers that "post 1,000 direct links, even if only 1 in 100 buys that's still 10 sales" is a fool's mentality.

      I hear ya'.

      I sometimes worry that if they carry on "promoting" like this, (a) we'll all get a bad reputation for it, (b) there'll be fewer and fewer places allowing "affiliate marketing" at all (in other words, we'll all pay for it, even those of us who generate traffic sensibly), and (c) that in the long run, it even increases the chances of more and more "regulations" being imposed on us, collectively, by more and more external regulators with bigger teeth, which can only eventually be bad for all of us.

      But these are "advanced concepts" and the simple reality is that it carries more impact when you just point out to people as politely as you can that "it's a silly thing to do and doesn't usually work anyway" (which is equally true, after all).
