Affiliate Strategies - Content v. PPC?

Is it quite common for people to use an entire site just to sell 1 affiliate product?

I've heard a lot about review sites with continuously updated content but I was thinking it might be faster (although lower margins) to use Google ads for certain keywords and just let the page views/conversions roll in? Obviously its about getting the right keywords also etc.

Most people who uses a single page site to promote a product leaves their site as soon as they are done selling. That's why Google introduced the Sandboxing process. But if you have a very good keyword and if you think that it is profitable then it is a very good process to build a site from scratch. If you have found a keyword that you think that has a lot of hungry customers and potential to help you built an authority site around it then i suggest that you build a site with a single affiliate product rather then promoting all the same products around it.
But while choosing a product do take the reputation and the customer service of that product into consideration. There are a whole of lot of product developers these days who are just there to make some quick bucks and run. If you promote a product like that then you will not get any return as the developer will stop selling after a few weeks and will not return to any customer query leaving a bad taste for the customers who bought the product from your site.
The best way i have found while building a site like that for myself, is to search on google using key word terms like "product developers name: bio", "product name review", "who is product developer's name" and "warrior forum- product name review". I hope this helps. Good luck
