Keywords show average position 2-7 but says bid price too low for first page?

Many of my keywords show an average position between 2-7. But they also say that the bid price is too low to show on the first page. Then gives me the recommended $ amount to hit first page.

If my keywords are averaging positions 2-7, doesn't that mean they're already on the first page? If so, why does it say it's below recommended amount for first page?

  • Yes, it happens quite often. You should not pay much attention to it.

Best likely answer: GIGO. That's computer programmer talk for garbage in, garbage out. The software has to work with the data it has. Possible reasons leading to this may include 1) corrupted data, 2) large volume skewing the result one way or another, a long-time and high quality advertiser for example. 3) programming error or calculation not anticipating a certain state or not taking it into account.

      Hi Trankuility,

I have found that average positions are just that, average positions. The fact is that for any particular keyword there are always multiple search terms that can trigger ad impressions. The AdWords system will let you know if your bid is below the first page bid on some of those possible search terms that might trigger your ad, while at the same time they might very well trigger ad impressions for other terms.

Aside from the issue of multiple search terms triggering ad impressions, there is also the issue of differing levels of competition based on device, location, hour of day, and day of week. So, at times your ad might not display for a certain location, or for certain device types, or for certain hours of the day.

To gain a better understanding of what you are missing you can look at your impression share data columns in reports and run dimension reports for locations, hour of day, and day of week.
