How do the #1 top Spots survive with the HIGH PPC rates?

Looking at my competition, we all have very similar landing pages and I bid very high to see how much the top spots cost, on the same keyword which all of us show up. The keyword is highly relevant and is exactly what I would think if I was searching for this product. Very high impression rate, decent 1-2% click through.
How are these guys making money? I cannot imagine their conversion rate is much higher than mine as we are all using the same funnel. Our landing pages look are mostly the same.
Am I missing something here?
PPC experts, do any of you ever bid the highest? If so, what is your reason?
