Hi there,

Everyone says that the best way to make affiliate sales is by having your list of subscribers.
"The money is in the list" they say. But from what I understand, building a list through PPC (Bing/Facebook/Google) can be quite expensive.

Lets say you pay 25C per click.

and lets say you have subscription rates of 1 to 6

then to build a 1000 subscribers list you need

6 * 0.25 * 1000 = $1500

Quite expensive, isn't it?

How do you build your email subscriber list?

Thanks,
Erik

    Hi Erik,

Not all lists have the same value.

Some lists aren't worth the costs to store them in the cloud, while other lists of the same size might be worth millions.

As an affiliate marketer, one of few real assets that your business will acquire over time is your customer list. A customer list is typically worth far more than a newsletter subscriber list. If your goal is to build a newsletter subscriber's list then you need to avoid targeting the the same audience segment that competitors are targeting for direct sales, as their value per click will be far higher than yours.

Successful marketing is about targeting the right audience, at the right moment, with the right message. If you understand and execute that principle properly you will be successful.

If you try to compete for the same audience segments that direct marketing advertisers are targeting for direct response sales, and you are just going for a newsletter subscription, you are going to pay way more for that traffic then it will be worth to you. Adjust your targeting to go for audience segments that are near the top of the sales funnel, low cost display ads or keywords with non-commercial intent will often be available at a much lower cost.

Or, consider building a customer list rather than a newsletter subscribers list. It will have a much higher per click value and may justify the higher cost.

Yes paid traffic is costly. Especially with no experience or quality training. It irritates me when people advise someone to just buy traffic. It's not that simple. If you want to drive traffic to your squeeze page, try blog commenting, forum participation, build up a social media following and stay active. Also, YouTube can be very lucrative for driving free traffic.

There are no shortcuts to building a large qualitative list of subscribers, so I would recommend you to focus on some recommended businesses to converting as many web visitors to subscribers as possible.

Something a lot of marketers often do is after someone opts in to their list, they re-direct them to the sales page of the product they are promoting. So some people will buy the product, which means the cost per subscriber is reduced.

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to build a list is have a contest or giveaway on Facebook. Of course, a list of people subscribing for a free gift is not not same as a customer list that already bought products.

The reason they say the money is in the list is two fold:

-on social networks it is hard to sell directly. People are not on Facebook to buy especially from someone they don't know. By giving something for free and promoting you product in the emails you increase the chances to make a sale.
-you can use PPC to a sales page but that's one exposure(sure you can retarget them). Having an email list that trusts you gives you the ability to market an infinite number of products an infinite number of times to the same audience. A new awesome product in your niche is out? Just send an email. Free.

Not expensive to build a list,if you know what you are doing then list building is actually free. you need to have front end offers that will be bought by your subscribers upfront that will give you the advertising money in form of commissions.
