You want to just type in root phrase in order to generate variation and get lot many similar keyword.
So for that the best one is "Google keyword planner".
But now a days there are some paid tools also coming in the market

For keyword research I mainly take the keywords for the competitors site which are the top 10 in SERP then get the search volume of those KW from Google keyword Planner, Those having the maximum search volume, I pick those.

There many keyword tools around and some of them are free and some are quite highly priced.
