Hi Guys,

I'm trying Google Adwords PPC

On my website I had a pop up that asked for an email and gave a free ebook. But Google said that was against the "destination experience" &

" Links that initiate a direct download from the ad

Note: This policy includes PDF files, even if the PDF is informational or includes product specs."

So do they mean PDF files linking from an ad or what.
Very confused at the moment.

It seems like you simply can't advertise using pop ups or scrolls etc.

Any advice appreciated

If understand your question and without looking at site, most likely, your pop up comes too quick or automatically. You may be able to get around google policy if delay pop up by 5 or 10 seconds.

If still issues, simple way around, just add that landing page as second or additional page to your website, this way google sees as website vs just landing page.

    Destination experience

Promotions or content that are unnecessarily difficult or frustrating to navigate
    • Examples: Websites with pop-ups or interstitial ads that interfere with the user's ability to see the content requested; hosted ads that are not clearly distinguishable from other site content; sites that disable or interfere with the browser's back button; websites that don't load quickly on most popular browsers and devices, or require download of an additional application to view the landing page (aside from common browser plug-ins)
Using a parked domain as an ad destination
    • Examples: site that is still under construction, site that is only used to link to other sites, site that is only intended to reserve a web address
Links that initiate a direct download from the ad
    • Note: This policy includes PDF files, even if the PDF is informational or includes product specs.

Ah, I see you can't have a pdf link from your landing page either. That was my next question. Am I reading that right?
You couldn't have a "click here for free pdf report" button on your landing page?
Or even a download of other sorts?

  • You are misunderstanding. You can have buttons to download any type of file. What you can't have is an ad that initiates the download when clicked.

Best to stay away from popups when using PPC. They are annoying and that's why they are not permitted. That's what they mean by a poor "destination experience", aka poor user experience.

So can you have a button that when someone clicks on it, it directs them to your afiliate offer?
On your web site I mean, not the ad

  • If you have links to your affiliate's sales page, that's also a poor user experience.

Think of it this way. You are at a store looking at merchandise, say a car. A salesman comes along and makes his pitch to help you make a purchase. The salesman is very helpful and good, good enough that you've decided to buy a car. You say "I'm sold, I'll buy it". Great, says the salesman let me take you over here. You expect to sit down and fill some papers, make your payment. Instead, you are faced with another salesman making HIS sales pitch. You just said you are sold and ready to buy, not listen to another salesman. Just take me to the checkout. In effect, that is what you are doing by making your pitch on your page for the product and having a button that says "buy me" only to be confronted with another sales pitch page.

All these are covered in the Adwords guidelines and policies. I suggest to any advertiser wishing to use Adwords to read, get familiar and understand these policies. It will save you lots of time and aggravation.
