OK, I built the sites and did the blog thing. Placed some affiliate ads with various products (some Clickbank, some Paidonresults).
Tried Adwords. Got 100's of clicks but not one sale. Got 50 emails though. Sent them a newsletter with affiliate links attached, still nothing.
I'm running out of money and patience.
Am i doing this all wrong?
Certainly feels like it.

You need a list of TARGETED subscribers. So your main focus should be building a list of potential customers that are interested in what you are selling. Then you need to build a relationship with them before they will purchase what you offer.

It doesn't sound to me like you are spending any time at all building a list. Remember, 'The Money Is In The List!" So how many subscribers do you have and have you built a rapport with them?

Daily I spend a minimum of 4 hours just doing things to grow my list. And no, I did not start making money right away but as my list grows and my relationship with my subscribers improves, I find that more and more of them are willing to purchase what I recommend.

And although I do post to all of my blogs daily, very few people purchase from any 3rd party ads I place on them. Primarily I use my blogs to build my reputation as an authority in my niche, not to sell 3rd party products. I also use them as list building tools. So I post a short (about 300 -400 words) article on my blogs. I use my resource blog to direct my readers to a subscription form for a specific list saying something like "If you would like, more FREE in-depth information about SUBJECT delivered to your in-box daily, go to URL." That URL is a squeeze page promoting my list, not a product.

Are the 3rd party products you posted on your blog relevant to what niche your blog is in? They need to be closely related to the posts you are making.

I have not done any PPC advertising at all as I really do not know enough about the subject. That is one of the things on my list I want to learn about. So, did you just jump in or did you spend some time learning how to write PPC campaigns?

      Really helpful post! Thank you.

I'm doing all this right now, so reading your post made me sigh with relief that I'm doing the right things.

For years, I built my blog and website, and I've professional published books ... I've basically built up the foundation of value content that I can now offer as part of my email campaigns. But I'm new to email marketing, so I'm always in search of tips from the veterans in this game. Yours is one of the most helpful posts I've come across so far. It's realistic and makes perfect sense.

I have many years of experience in traditional advertising, sales, and marketing along with my writing/publishing careers. I'm learning that Internet/email marketing is much that same. The fundamentals remain ... offer value, and stay in front of your target market consistently.

Wow, this is an amazing post! I love it. There is so much value packed in here, where do I start?

Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

Firstly, the original poster said they have a list of 50. I think we all agree that this is not going to do a lot. However, at what ooint do you see a list gaining traction and becoming a serious asset? I appreciate that this is a general question and a lot depends on the demographic of the list and niche it is in. What I am asking here is a more general, averages, sort of question.

Secondly, very, very interesting to see that you post short articles that are only 400 words long. This seems to be contrary to the perceived "wisdom" we are hearing from all the SEO gurus out there. They almost all seem to be propagating the idea that you need 2,500 + word posts, filled with rich content such as infographics, in order to rank. Do you get much traffic from your short 300 - 400 word articles?

Thirdly, what is your content tactic for these 300 - 400 word articles? Do you SEO your short posts by building back links to them or do you just do on page SEO?

Finally, how many short posts do you do each week?

Apologies for all the questions, I was just blown away by your post and feel I can learn a lot from you. There is something in your post that suggests you are someone who knows what they are doing.

I also think the jury is out on this idea that blog posts need to be 2,500 + words.

Look forward to your reply and thanks!

Build engagement with your list, quality content and freebies, don't keep hitting them with saes and links, do a questionnaire and ask them what they want.
Is your sales funnel / landing page functioning? have you tested your links,
Yes Bing is cheaper as others have said, found targeting an older audience better with Bing.
dlwalsh has given you good advice.
DO NOT GIVE UP!!!! It is purely a stumbling block, do you have a mentor?

    Hi mikeb222,

Now is the time to start learning and practicing marketing.

    Marketing vs.Selling

Marketing is a process that involves crafting a message based on a value proposition and promoting your product or service using that message. You are not really marketing though until you start setting up marketing experiments to test and measure competing variants in an attempt to discover why your targeted audience responds better to one message verses another.

    Market Segmentation

In addition to testing messages, you also need to incorporate the principle of market segmentation to craft a specific message that resonates with a specific market segment. If you are trying to target too broad of a market with too general of a message you will have very poor results. To be effective, you must focus on highly specific messages that precisely targets a narrow market segment with a highly relevant and compelling message.

    Marketing is Science

Marketing is not about opinions, or following a specific format or template, it is about testing measuring and adapting to data that is proven to show positive results. If you are not testing measuring and adapting you are not practicing marketing.

    Account Structure

In AdWords, you must first plan and structure your account so that you can target specific segments and isolate variables to get usable data. If you have not yet segmented your keywords into ad groups that focus on a very narrow and specific set of keywords that share an identical search intent then you have not properly structured your account.

If you are targeting the display network then you must also structure you account to focus on a very specific target audience that is rich in potential customers for your product or service. Structure you ad groups to target highly specific audience segments.

    Value Propositions

Once you have your account properly structured you can identify a few different value propositions to test against each other by crafting an ad for each value proposition that perfectly matches the search intent of search ads, or audience interest for display ads. By placing multiple ads within the same ad group (one for each value proposition you are testing) you are split testing those value propositions to see which resonates well for each of your targeted audience segments.

    Campaign Optimization

Once data starts rolling in, and you have enough data to be actionable, you can begin making adjustments. Start gradually increasing the ad spend on ad groups that are performing above average in key metrics and decreasing ad spend on ad groups that are performing below average. Over time you campaigns overall performance should increase significantly.

    HTH,

    Don Burk

    Hi PaulKay

I don't mind answering your questions at all. And thank you for the compliment.

I think a lot depends on the QUALITY of the content you send to your subscribers rather than how long the post is. I personally will never read a 2,500 word post. And, if I have that much to talk about, I will turn that into a short .pdf report, audio or video which all have a higher perceived value. I generally like my reports to be meaty and SHORT, 4 - 5 pages long. I have found that people tend to read a short report completely but may only read parts of a longer report or just skim it. Same holds true for a very long post. If I send them an info-graphic, I use it as a 'subscriber only' bonus as I talk about a little further in this post.

BTW That is why the first few emails you send to your new subscriber after they download your lead magnet should talk about things you discussed in your lead magnet.

As to when my list started making money for me, I made a few sales the first month I started online. Nothing dramatic but enough to pay for several domains, hosting and a few professional tools. I think it was about $400 total. So in actuality, I was 'in profit' my first month. My profits continue to increase the bigger my list becomes, the better known I become, and the amount of content and products I have online.

BTW about 10% of your list will actually purchase something from you every month. Some of the people on your list will never purchase anything and the majority will purchase a product only once in a while. But even those that never purchase anything are valuable as they may suggest your product to someone who will become your best customer.

Right from the beginning I started building a relationship with my list. I set up a schedule where I would send them an email one day which consisted of an informative article (and suggested a product related to the subject of the article which is also know as bum marketing). Then maybe the next day I would send a short report. Then a content article, then an audio, then a content article, next a video. Maybe a mind map, checklist, list of resources interspersed. Every one of my messages contains great value for my subscribers. I also include links to any good info I found that week that will help them. Occasionally I will send them a link to a 'subscriber only' bonus which is something valuable they get at no cost. I never tell them in the subject line that there is free bonus in that day's message. This really helps with my open rates as people love gifts but they can't get what I am gifting them with unless they open the message.

Once a month I query them as to what problems they are currently facing, what solutions, they tried, etc. so I know what to write about and also what product I need to create that month. And yes, I do create one product every month. It may be an e-book, a workshop, a coaching program, etc. I do this so I have a steady flow of MY products to promote to my lists.

By addressing their needs in my articles, short reports, audios, and videos, I build up a really loyal and RESPONSIVE list of subscribers, prospects, and customers.

BTW ALL of these free things talk about WHAT they need to do to solve their problems but not HOW to do it. The products I create and promote tell them the HOW. I learned that valuable lesson from Jimmy D. Brown and it has proved to be very profitable for me.

So every morning I send them a value packed email. Then I send them an action based, thought provoking, most of the time, promotional email every other afternoon. Sometimes I send a survey. It may be something such as:

    Hi SUBSCRIBER NAME,

Yesterday I was looking at my business and what I have accomplished so far this year. Although I did discover areas where I need to tweak what I am doing, I was surprised at how much I have accomplished so far this year.

    How about you?

Do you have a plan for how you will reach you long term business goal? Do you have yearly plan? A plan that you need to follow monthly in order to reach your goal for the year? A weekly plan to reach your monthly goal? And even a daily plan to meet your weekly goal?

You do? Congratulations! You have taken a major step towards achieving success.

For those of you that answered no, why not?

    BLAH BLAH BLAH.

At the end, I will give them the URL to a resource on plans and goals, a mind map, or something else that is related which of course is the URL to a squeeze page with a lead magnet for my e-book, workshop, or course on Goals and Plans.

As to the content I create and post daily, it is specific to the niche I am currently concentrating in. I have a broad niche (Website Development) but break that down into specific niches that I concentrate on for about 3 months (SEO, list building, article marketing, marketing with social media, etc). This way I reach many people. And while some people are interested in only on of my sub niches, many are interested in my major niche so want to learn all about Website Development. As those who are interested in one of my sub niches learn more about it, they usually are become interested in one or more of my sub niches so I get to promote a huge number of products to them.

I post daily to my blogs and my FB pages. I also submit at least 5 articles every day to article directories in the niche I am currently concentrating in. I also do guest blogging a couple times a week and make very short posts to several blogs in my niche every day.

I belong to several FB and LinkedIn groups. I post to 4 of them every day, I post daily in my favorite 2 groups and rotate which other ones I post to.

WHY? To establish myself as an expert so that more people join my lists and more people purchase my products. Yes, it is time consuming but I really enjoy what I do so it does not seem like a chore to me at all.

I do outsource a lot of stuff such as article writing for niches I have already established, posting articles to article directories, answering support questions on my help desk, etc. However, I do look at everything so that what is being put out there meets my standards which are very high!

I write all of the articles and posts for the niche I am currently concentrating on as I want my subscribers in that niche know the real me so I can establish a long term relationship with them. And yes, this post was written by me!

I do tend to ramble so I hope I have answered what you wanted to know and also gave you some more words for thought.

Feel free to contact me via email whenever you want.
