PPC seems like a no brainer, what am I missing?

So with the various tools available that allow you to see what an advertiser has done over the years in some cases, it seems to me that imitating their campaign should be successful.

There are only a few moving parts to the process.

Keywords, Ad copy, Website

By advertising to the exact keywords that they are using, generating copy that is comparable and a website that's competitive, maybe even better, how can you lose?

Worst case scenario you do a few tweaks here and there, but if there is an existing advertiser that's been doing the same thing for a good period of time, you can fairly safely assume there is money there and that they are fairly successful at extracting it.

What am I missing?

  • As long as there is 'Value' being adding to the audience, and it comes from a place of service, it is indeed hard to fail.

If you have a great opt-in page, with great targeting, it works

The only thing you are missing is "IMPLEMENTING"

Seriously, you just outlined how money gets made. Go do it.

Well, the biggest things you are missing are their conversion rates, CPC, back end, funnel, lifetime customer value...pretty much the whole ice berg that is below the water.

Some at the top are affiliate programs that are linking out to the offers.

      Those are great points though.

CPC can be tweaked to an extent other than that I'd just have to deal with a smaller margin until I can get better click pricing over time with volume.

Funnels can be imitated/improved on just like the rest.

    Hi dad2four,

While those are some of the core "moving parts" you are indeed missing quite a few others. An experienced advertiser might easily squash you using the exact same keywords, ad copy and website content.

Here are some of the things that can make a huge difference in the success of a PPC ad campaign:
    • Campaign account structure
    • Bids and bidding strategies
    • Cross-channel marketing strategies
    • Ad schedules and day parting
    • Negative keyword selection and strategies
    • Segment targeting strategies
    • Split testing ads, and bidding strategies.
    • Remarketing strategies
Each o f those topics could have volumes written about them.
