Question about "All rights Researved"

I have noticed that many web-sites have "Copy Right. All Rights Researved" at the bottom. I am not sure what exactly it means. For example, tomorrow I will publish my website with the content that I have developed. Who gurantees that someone else won't cut and paste what i have written on my web-site to their web-site? Note sure if i place this topic in the right section of the forum, but please can someone explain how one can protect the contents of his/her web-site?

"All rights reserved" is a phrase that originated in copyright law as part of copyright notices. It indicates that the copyright holder reserves, or holds for their own use, all the rights provided by copyright law, such as distribution, performance, and creation of derivative works; that is, they have not waived any such right. Copyright law in most countries no longer requires such notices, but the phrase persists. The original understanding of the phrase as relating specifically to copyright may have been supplanted by common usage of the phrase to refer to any legal right, although it is probably understood to refer at least to copyright.

In former times, the phrase was required as a result of the Buenos Aires Convention of 1910 which mandated that some statement of reservation of rights be made in order to secure protection in signatory countries of the convention.[1] it was required to add the term All rights reserved as a written notice that all rights granted under existing copyright law (i.e., the right to publish a work within a specific area) are retained by the copyright holder and that legal action may be taken against infringement.
The requirement to add a notice became obsolete and essentially deprecated on August 23, 2000, as every country that was a member of the Buenos Aires Convention (which is the only copyright treaty requiring this notice to be used) is also a member of the Berne Convention which requires protection be granted without any formality of notice of copyright.

Since copyright law is neither straighforward nor widely understood in its details, nor is the Buenos Aires Convention's previous requirement and current deprication of the phrase common lay knowledge, the phrase continues to hold popular currency and serve as a handy convention widely used by artists, writers and content creators to prevent ambiguity and clearly spell out the warning that their content is not up for grabs.

To answer your second question, there is no guarantee that others will not copy or cut and paste portions of your website. It is easy for people to do that on the Internet and not so easy to prevent them or to make them stop if you discover them doing it.

Even so, you should still post some form of a copyright notice on your web pages so visitors will know they cannot copy or use any of your material without your express permission.

There may be some kind of software you can use to prevent people from copying portions of your website, but I am not familiar with it.

No actually it is not impossible.

You can even mask your source code so that all anyone sees is encryption. If they copied that, they would need an unencrypt key to unscramble it. Not easy but I guess nothing is impossible.

Check though about how Google sees this issue. *not sure how the SEs deal with a masked site.

I know it is also possible to make text so that people can't copy it. When they go to highlight something it just doesn't highlight. Here again I can't think of the name of the program that is used for this - it is fairly common.

As with all things, Google it and see what you find. Maybe I will go and look myself if I get time.

If you have HostGator they offer a HotLink Protection utility. This would prevent people from stealing your images from your site. There's also a simple script you can add to your webpages to prevent people from highlighting, right-clicking, etc. on your pages. If I can find it I'll post it here.

Here's a script that will block the context menu from coming up for your visitors:

However, they will still have access to your source code and can still highlight your text and use the keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste the content. But, for people who don't know how to do that, it will be very annoying. I'll try to find more stuff if I have time.

It explains the advantages, but more so the disadvantages of not allowing people to copy and paste your content.
