Explorer 7 Crashing Alot?
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Does anyone notice that Explorer is crashing a lot lately? I don't know what is going on but for the past week or so it crashes several times a day - I have always been able to have several windows open and multiple documents and jump back and forth prior to this time.

I am not sure if it is because of them coming out with version 8 beta or because I installed a new printer, OR WHAT?

grrrrrrrrr!

Hi Pat

I have had a few problems with IE7 recently - it is freezing - but I thought it was probably my pc - plus I work with many windows open + Word.

I have not heard such good things about BETA IE8 - so I wont be downloading that yet!!

Cheers for now

Thanks Cyn. Yes that is what it does is freeze and then when I try to close it, it crashes all the windows.

Oh yes, you are wise - I learned my lesson with v7 - wait for them to debug it themselves before you download it, and don't be a hero 'beta tester' which gets you nothing but, well, bugs!

LOL like we need more aggravation!

Hi Pat

Something else I have noticed is that once the window freezes, if you just minimize all the windows then it sometimes sorts itself out without crashing.

Even Outlook freezes as well but this also "thaws" once the IE windows are minimized.

At least if this works it saves time opening up all the sites again.

Cheers for now

This has been really annoying lately!

I, too have had my comp freeze several times daily and we allknow how precious time is when your on the net ALL day long!

Like Cyn - I thought it was an issue with my own computer - so Im glad to hear others are having trouble too!
(not really - but you know what I mean?)

yeap - not into Beta testing although I have been helping out with a bets test for SYA and Im stoked with it so far!
So maybe we just hang back on IE8!

Hmm... seems you all need to switch to Firefox

I have at least 20 or 30 tabs open, and it never crashes. I do use IE from time to time, but I only have maybe two or three tabs open at once. I haven't had it crash or freeze on me, but I can tell it is very slow compared to Firefox.

There are pros and cons for both, though. IE is good for somethings that Firefox isn't and vice versa. But, for normal browsing or keeping your tabs, Firefox is the way to go.

If you close Firefox it saves all of your tabs. You can shutdown your computer and when you open Firefox back open it asks if you want to restore your previous session. Or, just hit Save when closing Firefox and all your webpages will still be there.

It's awesome!

Hmm... while we're on the IE and Firefox debate, could someone check something for me? If you use IE could you look at my blog at Work From Home Blog and see if all of the page loads?

It's not loading fully for me, but it looks fine in Firefox... go figure. I am wondering if it's just me or if other people are getting the same result.

Thanks!

Yeah, I prefer Firefox over IE.

I watched a video review of Google Chrome and heard good things about it, but I don't use it. It's similar to Firefox, though.

Okay... I just ran over to my parent's computer and checked my blog on there. It's doing the same thing! The rss is also messed up as well. Just when I thought the bugs were fixed.

And again... it's totally fine in Firefox. I don't know what to do now.

Pheww... problem fixed. That was too easy. There was some code in the post that IE was interpreting but Firefox wasn't. I guess the code was cutting off the post and leaving the rest of the page blank.

This is a perfect example of how it's good to use both IE and Firefox, not just Firefox. I wouldn't have known there was a problem if I didn't check it.

You are certainly right there Alan - every time I make changes to my site I check it in IE and Firefox. It is quite strange sometimes to see what does not display properly in Firefox - I notice images sometimes are not in alignment, yet in IE they are fine!

This has finally been addressed in IE8 - Microsoft is so proprietary and they refused to go along with the industry standards for so long.

Finally got the wake up call both with security issues and the formatting being off-kilter - guess why - Firefox.

So now from what I understand, it will be the same and for previously created sites it will have a button to fix it up.

It's about time Microsoft wakes up to the real world. Like the others, I'll hold off on the upgrade for a while.

Hello Everyone,

I'm having the same problem with IE-7 freezing and crashing, and like Cyn I thought it was my computer. I'm very happy that I read this post I'm now using Firefox and have no problem.

Ohhhh yaaaahhh, I have SooooooOoOooO had this problem lately!!!! Grrrrrrrr....However, upon installing my new memory chip yesterday (notice I'm all proud and feeling empowered that I did it all by myself hehe), the problem has been resolved!

Ask yourselves this question: Is my system short on virtual memory?? If it is, do not ignore it like I did for too long, and boy oh boy can I ever recommend a good company to buy your new memory from!!

But, perhaps there is a IE7 issue as well...the plot thickens...

I have 3 Gigs of RAM, Liane - way more than anyone needs unless they use Skype and web conference rooms to run presentations, like I do.

I am having the #$^%%^%% IE7 crashes ALL THE TIME - I also have cable connectivity (the fastest) and a Pentium Dual Processor (that's like having 2 processors).

There is no #%$^^%&^^ reason for this on my system. My suspicion is that the beta testing for IE8 has made the current version unstable.

They are so incompetent it will never make sense how they are ruling the world. Oh wait. Maybe that is an oxymoron of some kind since well you know.

Yeah, I have to totally agree that your computer memory can have a major impact on the performance of your computer. I do know quite a bit about computers, and after installing just 500 MB of more memory, you can greatly increase performance and speed. Memory is also cheap too.

Liane, where do you get your memory? I get all of my computer hardware from Tigerdirect.com. There shipping is super fast, and the products are top-notch.

Take Liane's advice if your computer is low on memory. Optimal memory nowadays I'd say is 2 GB. Also, be sure to empty your cache, temp files, cookies and history at least once a week. You'd be surprised how much difference it can make. And yes, I know it's a pain because then you have to enter all of your stuff in again, but such is life.

Of course, I have no problem believing that there is a problem with IE 7, afterall, it is Microsoft.

Pat, I'd say you can never have too much memory , but that's just me.

Your computer obviously is fast, from what you have installed. So, it can't be that.

Maybe your suspicion is right. I really don't know what to tell you, other than use Firefox or even Google Chrome.

The other option, if you're up to it, is to contact Microsoft about it, but I doubt you'll get anywhere.

Good Luck!

I got really tired of IE freezing up all of the time so I downloaded Firefox. I have to say I love Firefox, no freezing, no shut downs and it is really fast. Tim

It is different. I must say that Firefox isn't good for some things. I have noticed that YouTube videos stop playing after two seconds when viewing with Firefox. Not sure why. Also, I have the RealPlayer video download extension installed for IE and it works great. However, I get an error with Firefox. Not a big deal, but like I said they both have their pros and cons.

Well it is going to be a challenge. (oi vey)

FF is super naggy - can't redirect unless I allow this and scripts, and this or that - this is what my security used to do to me and I had to tone it all down.

I am all for super-security but it is tedious to be so secure that you can't function.

I guess once you get everything all trained it won't be so bad.

Note: I participate in a thread in the Off Topic Forum that is a video jukebox and it has a ton of youtube music videos - today's crop (5) all played in their entirety after I partially allowed scripts and jumped thru a few other hoops.

... at least it isn't crashing - so far 5 tabs open and 3 documents - so that is the point right? eeeeeee!

Yeah security can be a pain, having to allow this and that. Hmm I'll have to look into that. Sometimes they play and sometimes they don't.

I have over 30 tabs open all the time. Sometimes even more. Never has crashed. I like the fact that it saves your tabs even if you close the browser all together.

Yes, that is the point lol. It's hard to get much done if your browser keeps crashing on you all the time.

Is there a way to open a new tab without going to the File Menu/New Tab?

Nothing in the mouse right click menu either (least bad menu system)

I like icons - with IE7 you just click the little empty box on the row of tabs to open a new tab.

Yes! Just hit Ctrl + T and a new tab will open in a flash

Yeah, IE7 does make it a little easier for opening a new tab. All pros and cons for each.

Hello, all:

I just noticed this thread! Where have I been? (Don't answer that!)

The only possible problem I have noticed with IE7 is that I cannot access another popular forum that I frequent (CYN). I don't know if it is an IE problem or not, but it is the only site online that I am having trouble with and it's been about a week now.

I can open the main page and sign in, and I can see that other members are posting regularly, but when I try to open any CYN topic thread, it just loads and loads and loads until I have to close the browser. I'm waiting for an answer from their Help Desk.

But now I am wondering of it is an IE7 problem? I haven't tried it in any other browsers. Hmm.

Thanks, all, for the discussion here. Many Internet friends tell me to go to FireFox, but I am so busy, I can't risk the loading and learning curve that would be involved ... and all the problems the transition would create. Maybe someday.

I hear that, GT.

Have you cleared your cache lately? This may help with your issue at CYN.

It just takes a second.

Go to the tools menu of IE7
Click Internet Options
Click Delete on the General Tab
Delete Temporary Files
Delete Cookies

If that doesn't help then download ccleaner.com for free and analyze your applications (3-minutes have coffee) and then sweep the registry (3-minutes have a donut)

Reboot your PC - You need to do these things periodically anyway - It can't hurt and might help.

I love CCleaner! That little tool is amazing. I usually rack up around 300 MB of junk before I use it lol.

Honestly, GT, I don't think Firefox is much of a learning curve. You already know how to surf the net, so it's no different. You don't have to import your favorites if you don't want to, either.

I still use IE for all of my bookmarks. Not sure why, though

I imported all my IE bookmarks to FireFox - now that I figured out a long time ago and I just redid it as I have added so many.

Well so far going somewhat smoothly other than the constant nagging.

One bad one though is IE has a little thingy where you can adjust the size 100% and so forth.

I can't find this on Firefox. The thing is on the helpdesk I have to type in a little box to respond and for some reason FF is making the text less than size=1 - I literally can't read it. When I hit submit then it adjusts to a regular size I can read - but this is after it is sent.

I can't be bothered to use both browsers so if there is going to be any one of my main apps that I can't use then I will have to choose the crashing one again (drat).

Pat, in Firefox, just go up to View, then Zoom. Choose to Zoom In and that should do the trick. I think that's what you meant by it being too small. Just keep zooming in until it's as big as you want it. I had this same problem.

OK Duh - I just hit it once instead of doing Control plus + - doing it a couple times definitely works.

Thanks. Sorry if I am imposing by so many questions! I am glad you are there but just ignore me if it gets on your nerves.

Well I gave it a full day and I am glad that now I know a lot more about FireFox.

It is like they say, lightening fast and doesn't crash.

However, I am back to klunky, unstable IE7 because there are just too many things that irritate me about FF and I guess more experience I will learn more ways around things but for now, I just don't want to deal with it.

I can't stand the "allow" everytime I click a hyperlink because I do this about 100 times a day for new orders to check for a valid, hosted domain. It adds one more step to each one.

I can't stand that damn Script message which I clicked everything to get rid - even after you enable a site (1/2 allowed) the bar is there. Even on the same exact site but a different account, I have to keep enabling it. Even after I checked to make it disappear after 20 seconds, it is still there.

It will not save all my passwords for PIPS merely because many of them start with the same domain and then have other pages for various applications I use to set up accounts. It will only save one of them. Being I have always had them all saved, with FF I need to look a few of them up everytime when they are not saved.

So it is not perfect by any means but I do really like many things about it and may use it for something sometimes.

I am glad I know how to use it in case I have to use it someday - I won't feel as clumsy.

Thank you very much for all your help Alan.

(It's because I'm "chicken." I'm worried I'll start the process, then run into bumps like Pat has mentioned, then run out of time to deal with it, and then I've not only lost a day fiddling with it, but I haven't even finished the conversion process ... see? I'm a worry wart!)

Hey Pat,

Try deleting some files from your computer. I had a good amount of my videos on my laptop and it was starting to be very slow for me too. After deleting them and a few other stuff, the speed was at normal again.

So delete un-wanted files.

Tal - Thanks but that is not the issue at all.

I have 3/4 of my hard drive available - that is I am only using 1/4 of my storage and 3 GIGs of RAM is more than sufficient.

I don't have any videos or music on my hard drive.

I purge temp files weekly.

Pat, I think you may have your privacy and security settings too high. I have never had that much trouble with Firefox before.

GT, you're right. But, I think once you have your settings the way you want everything will work smoothly. You can still have security without having annoying pop-ups all the time asking your permission for this or that. If you can spare some time it's worth it.

I have yet to have a problem with IE7. I just must be lucky or something

IE7 crashing/freezing.

For what its worth, I was getting this on my lappy ( before the
HDD crashed and burned lol).

After putting in the new HDD, I just could not face days of
updating the original Toshiba XP SP1 restore disks again.
So this time used an SP3 XP disk to install.

Have not had an issue at all with IE7 on the SP3 install, whereas
I did on the hugely updated SP1. (HDD is irrelevant)

So guess it could be some issue with SP1 or 2 ... or possibly
IE6 to 7 updates ????????

Just a thought

Must say that the plugin for FF that I most like is the
otherwise pointless "Coloured Tabs".
Just makes it "nicer and comfy"

Hmm... never thought of a SP issue. I have SP 3 installed. So, check your SP and if you have 1 or 2 I would recommend updating it. I have not had an issue, of course I only have maybe 2 or 3 tabs open at any given time on IE as I mostly use Firefox.

HI Mike.

I have XP SP3
I have had IE7 for a long time.

I am thinking of reinstalling IE7 because if it is not that it has been rendered unstable by the IE8 beta test configuration - (out there) then it may be that my IE7 is corrupted.

God help me if I do this, because I had so many problems with the original install from IE6 to 7

I think I will wait until Sunday (day off) and find a bunch of stuff to break around here just in case. Anybody got a Stretch Armstrong doll? punching bag?

Oh dear Pat, I feel your pain!!!! I can only imagine what having all the necessary equipment/memory bla bla and still your system freezes and crashes OMG...and all you have to do in a day! Is your hair really still brown?

Alan, I got my memory from Crucial.com. I was so impressed with their customer service that I left a lovely review - I can't believe I was actually the 183rd person to give a 5-star review for a measly GB!!

Thanks for the sympathy, Liane!

Great minds think alike - I have used Crucial.com for years through so many PC memory upgrades. I too am totally impressed with them.

I'm so glad you are still around for a few days in a row! We need you around here so hopefully you will not disappear again anytime soon!

Here in Northern California it is finally winding down our 'Indian Summer' - It is still nasty hot in the afternoon but starts out with a nice cloud cover in the morning, and gets nice and chilly at night.

We are expecting rain Friday and more on Saturday. We really need it and I am always happy in any case because I love rain.

This is also my favorite season of the year beginning now. Sales are picking up again and it's all good in spite of Internet Explorer!

Take care.

Pat
