anchor text
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Hi everyone
Can anyone help me understand how anchor text works? I am writing blogs on wordpress and creating anchor text by highlighting text in the blog and clicking the link icon and putting in my URL.
What I am not clear about is why I am doing this? Am I trying to rank for a keyword? If so should I use the same keyword repeatedly in the title and the text or should I choose several different ones or does it not matter.
All and any explanations gratefully received.
Steve

the anchor text is the most important for ranking. use your keywords in the anchor text . don't use the same keyword for all the links, use as many as you can

Anchor text is the keywords you use in your link that you want your website to rank for.

Instead of linking to your site like this... http://www.gr1innovations.com
You would link to it like this... Make Money

So, in the above example, the anchor text is "make money" and that would be the keywords you want to rank for.

Yes, you should vary your anchor text. If you continue with the above example, you might vary your anchor text on different sites between these keywords...

make money online
how to make money
earn money
money making

...and so on.

Does that help?

Thanks Trent thats much clearer.
So if I understand correctly by varying the anchor text I will be ranking for several keywords. Should I pick say half a dozen and just always apply them in my blogs and articles? ie. is it pointless having more than a few?
Also should the title to the piece always be one of the chosen anchor text? or is it irrelevant?
Is there a given number of times per blog/article you should add anchor text?

Yes, varying it between a half dozen or so should be sufficient. The reason you do that is because it looks very unnatural to have all your anchors be the same thing. And because it helps you rank for more than just one keyword phrase, which gives you a lot more traffic in the long run.

The title doesn't always have to be the chosen anchor text, but it's best if it is at least closely related. And having keywords mixed in your titles is best. For example, let's say you chose "make money" as your main keyword as in my example in the last reply. Your post title might be, "7 Ways to Make Money Without Spending Any" or something like that.

There's no given number of times you should add it in your post/article. Just make it flow naturally. You don't want to stuff it all over the place. A few times per article is sufficient.

I think Trent explained this thoroughly. Just a note on the keyword density, this can be checked via tools like seoquake on firefox and I would try to aim to have a keyword density of 2%-4% , which works best for most keywords.

Also, to add your keyword in the first and last paragraph of your article will help you to rank high for that keyword.

Overall, take on board what Trent has told you, it is great advice.
