Hi All, Yesterday I spent nearly 3 hours checking my Email that had 180 messages from directories I had paid t have my website put in, and nearly all suggested I put their backlink on my site. To start of with if I did that I would have no room for the other things. Secondly I have not yet learned how to do this. Is it really necessary that I do these backlinks? I did download My free ARMY KNIFE programme, but all it does is confuse me more. The help section does not go into great detail. Ude |

Hi Ude, sounds like these directories are asking you for a reciprocal link. If my memory serves me correct you must create a page that will list that directory's page. Usually they supply you with the code you need to add to your page. I submit my site manually and to those that don't require a reciprocal link. Maybe another member will be along shortly to explain exactly how to do this. Tim

Hello, Ude: Like Tim, I typically only submit my site to directories that do not require reciprical links. However, I still get emails from directories asking me to post their links. To date, I have not done that. I keep thinking that I will create a new page just for directory links, but I just haven't found the time to do that yet. I don't know what software you have available, but as a member of the PIPS Power Group, I received a customized page template from Suzanne Morrison, and also through the PPG, I was directed to the Nvu site where I downloaded the Nvu html page editor to my computer. That is how I create new pages for my StarrBizz.com site. Actually, now that I think of it, I recall seeing where Stone provides a link to Nvu somewhere in the 30 Days to Success guide. I just noticed that earlier this week. However, I also recall reading somewhere recently that Nvu is no longer providing support. There are other html editors available. (Komposer?) GT |

Well you need to check directory terms. Some of them offer you one way link but also ask you to place their link on your website (however it's optional). Another directories will require you to link to them in order to get listed in their directory (it's called repricoral linking). The best way to manage the links like that is to open additional page where you can place the links. I usually do this using my FrontPAge editor. Best Regards Dan |

Just delete the emails and don't worry about it. Most of the sites are only requesting a link. Only a few require one. Just ignore them. If you put outgoung links back to all those sites, even on a hidden page, you're going to bleed out and lose PR. Just ignore them. |

Hello, Afa: Basically, backlinks are when you get another website to post a link that "points back to" your website - that is a backlink. For example, if I posted an article on my site or a post on my blog and I included in it a link to your website (or blog, or inside web page) that counts as a backlink for you. A couple things to note about backlinks: the more you get, the better the search engines like you; but you want to try to get quality backlinks - that is, links from sites with a good Page Rank. GT |

I have recently read that directory submissions are good only for paid ones not free ones. In the Google’s Q&A with webmasters recently ”…Matt Cutts said: There’s always the chance that we’ll discount directory links in the future….” It has not happened yet but perhaps it's Google's hint of what is to come. Of course I can be totally wrong too. While Google has not discount directory links at the moment, who knows what will happen with directory links in the future where Google is concerned. My advice is if you still like to do directory submission, be very selective. Use those that manually review your submissions, not those automated submissions. There is a post aptly called "Quit Wasting Your Time With Directory Submissions' found in my last weeks ' Links Round Up" that you may want to read up: Link Love Links Round Up No. 11 Peter Lee |

My biggest concern is you paid to have those links posted. I would assume you used a site to do the work for you and paid them. If your link was posted on a lot of sites then it was probably worth the money. But, i wouldn't keep paying to have it done if they require a reciprocal link. If their emails are requiring a reciprocal link then they will not post your link if you do not do it. That could end up being a waste of money. If they are not requiring it then just ignore the emails. As far as Google is concerned, they double talk too much for me to listen to. Personally, I wish another search engine would knock them off their horse but that isn't going to happen for a while. |
