Hi Landon,

A backlink is a link to your website from another website.

Once your website has been optimized for the search engines, building backlinks can help push your website up in the search engine rankings.

How many do you need? Well, it depends on what keyword phrase you are targeting.

As an example, say you are going for the phrase "how to make money online". Type this phrase into Google.com (without the quotes) and then take a note of the URL of your main competitiors (e.g. the top 2 sites on page one and perhaps the top 2 sites on page 2)

Next, go to this link popularity tool and enter your own website and the website of these three competitors.

This will show you how many backlinks your website has compared to your competitors and this will give you a rough idea of how many backlinks you need to get a page one or page two ranking in Google.

The quality of the backlinks is also very important and a link from a page with a high Google page rank will have more weighting than a link from a page with a lower page rank.

I would say get as many backlinks as you possibly can. But, keep in mind what Suzanne said about the quality of backlinks. That is very important.

That's intereting, I've never used that tool, but the results I got seems very odd, i.e. I searched for the phrase free phone call , entered the top 4 URLS into the tool and got the following results;
icall.com (ranked 1, links=540)
evaphone.com (ranked 2, links=5322)
fonecalls4free.com (ranked 3, links=27)
skype.com (ranked 4, links=31,903,866)

does that mean that this link popularity is for all links for all key phrases used by each site and not just the popularity of the key phrase used for the search?

Hi Scorpio,

This tool just returns the total backlinks in both Yahoo & Google, regardless of the anchor text.

One important thing that it doesn't show of course is the quality of the links. For example, one high quality link could be worth more than 5 low quality ones.

The on page optimization is obviously playing a big part in the results shown above. The first site has better on page optimization for the keyword phrase "free phone call" than the others.

To get a good ranking you need a combination of good on-page optimization and good backlinks.

There are a lot of things that Google takes into account when ranking websites for various keywords. For example, even though fonecalls4free.com only has 27 total back links, their website may be more optimized for those specific keywords...ie free phone call.

Suzanne also mentioned how some backlinks carry more weight...find high PR blogs and leave comments on those blogs with a link back to your website. This will give you some leverage on your back link work.

If you're begging for links from someone else's site, here's a tip. Since you need "quality" backlinks, you can start out by checking the cache date in Google. In the search box enter: "cache:www.thedomainname". If the cache date is more than a month old, or worse yet, unchached, you might not want to waste the effort.

Thanks for sharing that tip with us, Russ. That's something I actually have never thought of before. It certainly makes sense . Goes with my theory that the more a site is visited by Google, the better.

well this is a tricky question, as far as I know there is no one can tell how many links do you need to get your site notice and rank top 10 in search engines. it all depends a lot of factors, things like domain age, the quality of incoming links, how well you optimize for your web pages, (on page seo) and the diversity of IP address are those things you need to worry of.

In simple form do a search on Google, and look for things like "submit URL",
free one way link directories, article directories, are the things you need to take care of... in general don't submit the web directories' sister sites if they got some, most likely these are the links come from the same IP address.

and search engine doesn't count much as you are submitting a network with different geographical locations.

There are a lot of good responses here but it all depends on the keyword a term like "This is a no traffic term" will only take a few however a term like "Marketing" or "Money" will take several hundred thousand.

I think there is no rule to how many backlinks, what is more important its is relevancy and quality. Then building it naturally is a key to success.

I, too, am working on backlinks. I'm going to enter the URL of that unmodified PIPS site I found, I think it was homebusiness.com but I'll look again. Then I'll check the others on the top page too. I seriously think when the spiders hit my page it will rank higher than that other PIPS site though.

Everyday you should set yourself up a goal of how many backlinks am I going to get today via blogging, social bookmarks, forum posting (not trolling as we have a couple of those people here..LOL), article writing and posting, directory submissions, etc.

Sometimes people struggle to get their website looking perfect when you dont even know if changes you have made will work because you dont have the traffic...

Get the traffic first via backlinks and search engine rankings and then you can see whats converting on your site or not...

Here is another point of view on this. Once you are noticed by the search engines how many backlinks does it take to maintain your position

When you look at this way you will realize you need thousands of backlinks to get noticed and to keep being noticed. There have been many good answers in this thread, but I like what Jeff Casmer said that he trys to get at least 10 backlinks a day. This is a good goal and really can pay off over the years.

Two reasons:

First, all smart marketers are doing it, so you need to be able to keep up with them!

Second, for various reasons, a few of your backlinks may drop away with time, or decrease in relevance, so you want to keep ahead of the game by replacing them before you lose them.

Our pleasure....backlinks is the name of the game and good backlinks at that. As stated above there are multiple ways of doing this. Some people may say "Monday is my day to post in forums and Tuesday might be article writing, etc"

or

You can choose to do a little each day in several forms to get backlinks in several different ways....

In connection to backlinking, I have seen plenty of sites boasting to offer 'one-way quality' links ranging from 1000 to 10,000. What do you people think about such offers?

Personally, I don't like to trust on them and waste money but don't you think it is well worth giving a try for $20 a month for 1000 links for say 3-4 months?

I wouldn't trust them. Perhaps you could share the link with us? I would do your research first and see what other people have to say about them before spending any of your money.

Getting backlinks is great if you want a site that will give you free backlinks try Free Backlinks you can get 250 PR0 to PR4 backlinks related to up to 4 keywords or keyword phrases I think on one website only. If you want to pay $19.95 a month you can 250 backlinks on 50 seperate webpages.

Yes, i would agree that the quality of the backlinks is more important than the quantity, but some people tens to go overboard with it. Meaning, they only worry about getting backlinks from pages with pagerank 3 or above. In my opinion, it's best to get any type of links you can as long as its from a "reputable website".

you only need 1 backlink to get notice by a search engine. However, to get ranked highly you need many of a good quality (i.e. with your keyword anchor text) - there is not one set number you need though. It depends upon how aggressively your compeitition is promoting etc

It depends, but I wouldn't focus on just one. It also depends on where the backlink is. Not just any ole' backlink will do.

As far as I know PR is mainly the result of the quality and quantity of backlinks you have, and maybe a little to do with your content and update frequency. Focus on getting quality, high PR backlinks to your site.

That is a great plan, 50-100 l;inks a month.

If you article market using a program such as SubmitYourArticle (Small Successful Business Ideas) you can get 50 backlinks with each article. 10-20 articles a month will give you a good jump. Then start blog commenting and doing other things for even more back links. If you use FireFox browser and install SEO Quake you can see exactly how many backlinks you will need to rank for your chosen keywords. It will help you make smarter keyword choices so you can get on the first page. By the way, first page and the top 3 is possible in any chosen market including "work from home" if you use the right keywords.
