Hi, I would just like ask for your opinion what could have gone wrong with my website's PR. Ist week of january i got a PR from 0 and then i jumped to 3. I made some small changes on my website and after a week my PR went down to PR1. What could have gone wrong? |

It is fairly common for the PR to fluctuate. Don't worry about it. Remember PR doesn't buy anything. Just keep on pushing! |

I agree with Pat. PR isn't really all that important for the overall success of your business. Plus as she said, it can fluctuate up and down. There's like 200 variables that make up a PR ranking. Don't sweat it. Alan |

Hello, Steve and Patricia: In principle, I believe the same as you in that PR doesn't buy anything. Personally, I use it as a personal measurement of progress and personal motivator to keep improving my site and my marketing efforts. However, you may be able to use PR as part of your back linking strategy. We are often told that we should try to get back links from sites with good, or higher, PR. Conversely, when our PR improves, we are more likely to get link invitations from higher PR sites. So, even though PR doesn't exactly buy anything, and most marketers need not dwell on the minimal value PR might bring, I think there still may be a bit of value to be considered in PR. GT |

PR does fluctuate up and down, according to Google it is in a constant state of change, however Google only updates PR for the general public about 4 times a year. There was a "public" update a few weeks ago however you shouldn't see another change a week later, I'd almost go as far as to say that is impossible. My guess is you might be looking at two different pages perhaps? Maybe yourdomain.com vs www.yourdomain.com? As the others have stated though it's traffic which is important, have you seen a decrease in traffic? If not as Alan says "don't sweat it". Every now and then Google devalues PageRank it's called the dampening effect, it basically keeps PageRank within certain parameters. If you are not constantly building links you may find your PageRank decrease over time but that does not necessarily mean your rankings will decrease. The main ones who lose out are the ones who sell links, as a link from PR7 site is worth much more than a PR5 for example. Regards, Mike. |

There are various reasons for your page rank going down the way: It could be one of these or a combination of all of them: 1) The number of backlinks to your site has decreased 2) Some of the sites linking to you have had a page rank drop 3) You have added more outbound links to the page that has lost the page rank 4) In general as the number of websites on the internet increases, it will be more difficult to get a higher page rank. As Mike says above, the page rank is devalued. The most important thing is your traffic. Has this decreased? If not, then don't worry and try not to stress over the little green bar Cheers, Suzanne |

Hi Jennifer, Very good suggestions and the bottom line is has your traffic decreased at all? I certainly put some value into PR and my Alexa rank as it at least gives me an idea of what the perception might be of my business...................... You can have a PR of 6 but if no one buys anything whats the point? Take care Jeff Casmer |
