What should I use to block spamming to my blogs?
Share on:

Is askime plugin the best to block spamming to my blogs I think I spelled it wrong?

I checked my blogs and have several thousand spam comments on each one I have over 30 blogs do the math. First is there a easy way of deleting all comments? What is the setting I have to set to block all comments I did disable comments but noticed that the deep threaded comments was enabled something like that do I disable it as well?

Last is there a easy plugin that I can use? I never bothered with the askime plugin did not want to bother with the api stuff.

Go to plugins and 'add plugin'

search for spam free wordpress

there are 3 free ones that are '5 star' (highest rating)

MP Spam Be Gone
Spam Free Wordpress
IP Blocker (can't remember exact name)

Super simple nothing to do and FREE - Just click 'Install' and then wait a second and click 'Activate'.

Set your comments to be moderated.

At the top of your moderate comments is a check box

If you check that box it will check all the comments on that page.

Then just use the drop-down menu to choose 'mark as spam'

Unfortunately you will have to keep doing this over and over until you clear them out - you might want to take as many pages as you can stand each day until you clear out your backlog.

Just keep reminding yourself that now that you have a spam block plug-in you will never have to do this again.

Hopefully you have Askimet and have signed up and received your code? It stops a lot but not all. You need to "bother with it"

One of the best ways I know and use is a Captcha for all comments. Forces the comment or to put in the Captcha before they can post a comment. Just search for Captcha in your plugins.

Also make sure your have admin approval required for comments ticked in your back office. This lets you check them before they are posted.

you can delete all the comments from your cpanel goto the my php admin
and do one blog at a time but you can delete all comments at one command

Goto your cpanel >>>>select: myphpadmin>>>>> on side is list of all wordpress installs select the one for blog in question they are listed like _wrd1 _wrd2 etc...
after selected on top menu is SQL click this and enter one of codes below

enter this command for pending comments
DELETE FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = 0

or this for approved comments
DELETE FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_approved = 1

Please PIPS members remember to back up your site in Wordpress/Tools --

download the back up file to your PC and remember where you put it ---

before you do anything like the above suggestion.

Remember if you can no longer get to wp-admin or wp-login.php the only thing I can do is a complete reinstall of Wordpress.

I can't save your work and you will have lost all your blog posts and any custom design to the theme. (however it may be the case that the host will have made a back-up and can save you so that is another option - but why take the chance - just back the site up frequently to keep the most recent version)

So be sure to back up frequently in any case (even if you are not going to do this suggestion in cpanel.

For the most part as I have always said also, make your changes only through the Wordpress Appearance Editor and the Chameleon Theme Editor unless you are adept at PHP/SQL like Fallen Angel sounds like he is.

I was getting more than 150 spam comments everyday in one blog, but since i installed
this plugin called "Antispam for all fields" everything stopped am happy now
May be u can try it. go to plugins and type "
Antispam for all fields" and go to set up and check the fields you want, it is very easy to use.

Good tip!

Noticed that you do not have CAPTCHA installed for comments. CAPTCHA will deter most 'comment spammers' and should be installed on all WP blogs.

Here is the WP link for the CAPTCHA plugin most webmasters use and the author is considered to be one of the top 10 authorities on WP:

Code:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/si-captcha-for-wordpress/

Adds CAPTCHA anti-spam methods to WordPress on the forms for comments, registration, lost password, login, or all. For WP, WPMU, and BuddyPress.
Also, noticed that your version of WP is out of date.

Again, nice tip! Thank you for your contribution!
