What a riot. I'm often told I charge way too little for my products, so I went thinking I might actually get guidance... even though that wasn't what this was about, I loved it!

My favorites were #6 and #8

Haha... thanks for the laugh, GT. It's very hard finding a happy medium for sure. You don't want to charge too much and scare them away, but you don't want to charge too little and make barely anything for a bunch of work.

Hello, PIPS team:

Thanks for your comments here. I love the humour in that post, but seriously, if you provide services to larger businesses and corporations, you don't need to be afraid to charge the fair market rate - they understand and respect that (as long as you provide value). When setting your prices, be sure to do some research and find out what the going rate IS for your work in relation to your targeted customer.

For example, when I first set my writing rates for local clients, I checked a number of sources, including the Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC), and set my rates to something similar.

One local client, after the first year, even suggested to me that I raise my rates (which I did!

)!

Another wrote up my contract at a price about 20 percent higher than what I suggested (because I just gave a price range and gave them the opportunity to set the price at something fair compared to their previous writer).

You never know unless you ask ... but I know it can be difficult to ask a fair rate when you're just starting out.

So... remember, when you start getting outsourcing calls from overseas sweatboxes, maybe that's a sign you may be charging too little!
